Default Topps 206 Buyback Dilemma......

Posted By: James

This is a pleasant dilemma to have. I have a Topps 206 vintage buyback of Wildfire Schulte of the Cubs. The card itself is one of the best conditioned buyback cards I've seen. Beautiful color, centering, clean Sweet Caporal 350-460 back, minor rounding on 2 corners and a touch on another. Absolutely no flaws on the surface. I'm confident that this is PSA 6 MAYBE even a 7. Should I keep this encapsulated as is, or slip it out and send it to PSA/SGC/etc? I'm also wondering if there is a company that would grade these buyback cards for the card inside without having to remove it from it's protective casing. Please advise!

James

Default Topps 206 Buyback Dilemma......

Posted By: Lee Behrens

I sent a couple of T206 buybacks to SGC and had them removed from the Topps holder. I asked them about grading the card inside but they would not and I am happier having a T206 in a SGC holder than the Topps holder. If you think the card will grade that high I would just let the grading company grade the card if it is resale you are looking at.
The cards in the Topps holder seem to command a little premium no matter what the condition of the card, but I have never seen any that would grrade higher then Ex and they have been few and far between.
If you want to resell it get it graded, if not I would keep it in the Topps holder.

40-50 bucks in the topps holder so if it'll grade a 5-6, you should definitely free it from that crap and get it graded. 5-6 T206's have been bringing 75-125 or more lately.

Minor rounding of 2 corners? You mentioned that this card could do a 6 or 7 possibly. These grades are pretty high for this set 'minor rounding' could get in the way..
But as Jay has mentioned SGC wont slab in the holder. Perhaps one of the others will. I doubt it, but it cant hurt.

I had the Topps holder removed and graded by PRO and they gave it a Gem Mint. The buyback went for $3 on half-ebay.
