Default R330 Double Play, R312 Pastels, or Meusel Set

I'm working on a T222 set (marathon) and interested in a second set. I can't decide what to work on so I figured I'd hear some pros and cons of from everyone here. I'm heading to a show Sunday and would like to grab a few cards to get going.

The Meusel master set sounds the most fun to me, and I imagine it would be the most challenging and would expose you to a variety of sets that you might not otherwise collect.

I would go for the R312s — they're one of the most attractive sets of the 1930s, and they feature a nice mix of players, including some fantastic group shots (Wagner/Vaughn, Grove/Mack, etc.). Completing a set seems within reach. A Double Play set also seems like a reasonable goal, but it's almost all sepia portraits — I'd just as soon buy an old baseball guide for a fraction of the price and get pretty much the same thing. I agree a Bob Meusel collection sounds interesting, but I'd pick a player from the 1910 era or the 1930s instead because the cards are so much nicer. The same photograph is often used over and over on '20s cards, and when color is used, the artwork is mediocre at best. "Long Bob" did get a nice Exhibit card, though ...

I enjoyed doing the double play. Pretty easy to complete, nice enough player selection.

Honestly, I'd never do it myself, but I would like to find an appropriately priced set of the cards cut in half.

Double Play has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, but the disadvantage of being boring. I like the idea of a player master set, but I'll second the criticism of picking someone who played in the 1920s, probably the worst decade for cards (pre-1980 at least). Some of the pastels are neat, but mostly I'm not a fan. Which means: pick any of them! Then you won't be competing with me for cards!

Seriously though, if you're interested in other suggestions, how about W517? It's got tons of hall of famers, the cards are large (like the pastels) and mostly inexpensive (like Double Play). Yeah, there's Gehrig and a couple Ruths, so the set isn't easy to complete exactly, but given the other options you mentioned, it seems like it might be the sort of thing that interests you.

Looks like the R312s are pushing to the top. Taking a look at my budget I may tackle those and the Meusel set.

R312 does have some interesting cards for not a lot of money. Definitely can be collected on a budget.

I voted for the double play set. Not only does it include very brief bio/stats it also has some overlooked HOF RC cards (Rizzuto, Slaughter, Boudreau).

Looks like the R312s won by a not so narrow margin. Not really surprising due to the competition. Now if you put a poll up with other cards, R312s might not fair as well. I was watching a Double Play Joe D a few days ago on ebay and it skyrocketed at the end...I think it was $600+ (it was a 5 or 5.5 though)....I liked that card!!

The R312 set has always been something I wanted to complete. I recently picked up 4 cards during the last 10% ebay bucks promotion. I'll be tackling the R312s as well as the Mesuel master set. I have a feeling my money will go further at National with these two quests rather than just my T222 set.
