It's an E122, not an E121.

No opinion as to authenticity.

ETA looks like Pete beat me to it.

Gut tells me 100% fake. Just seems very suspicious.

A look at the bid history of the five previous cards the seller has sold should be all you need to see to stay far away from this auction. All five auctions had the same "0" feedback bidder taking part. In three of the auctions, the 0 feedback bidder was the underbidder. In one of the auctions, the 0 bidder "won" the auction. The 0 feedback bidder has a 94 percent bid rate with that seller.

It should also give reason for pause when a low feedback seller is suddenly selling cards of Ruth, Cobb, Hornsby (that, of course, would be "Rodgers" Hornsby), Wheat.

The panel that has Ruth's name, etc. should be tinted gray. Fake in the most fake-like way.

I am interested in everyone's thoughts as I know very little about b&w E cards, but the name box is gray, it is just a poor photo.

Appears fake and has brand new scotch tape across the middle, which I more than highly doubt anyone today would apply to a real version.

If you zoom in, the bottom lettering has a dox matrix, where the real lettering should be solid.

Interesting.

My first reaction was that it's fake. And for the price it will probably bring, that's the sensible choice.

But thinking and checking a couple things.

I'm not sure how I'd age the tape like that. I'd have to play around with some tape for quite a while and probably not find a way. So maybe point for?

Looking at examples I can find on Google, nearly all of them have consistent differences from this one that go beyond the name box.
Then I saw this one...
http://www.goodwinandco.com/1922_Ame...-LOT30994.aspx

Which matches the one from Ebay and is graded.
So that makes me wonder... Is the Ebay one good? Or is the One in the SGC slab fake and graded. (Or put in a compromised slab? although I'd like to think that would get caught by the auction house)

I'm not sure that would be enough for me to bid.
Especially knowing there have been press printed fakes of these series around for a long time. I bought this one back in early 78. (different series, but similar enough. )

The same seller "sold" a similar poor condition Ruth E121 (throwing pose) last week for over $2,600. eBay item number:132389757440

As stated above, the tape isn't aged. It's brand new tape applied over an artificially aged card.

Beyond that, look at Ruth's name and look closely at the name plate. There's no comparison between the two. The Goodwin card is real and the one sold by beachbumnj is a cheap photocopy.

The Goodwin card has the exact same things different or missing that the Ebay card has missing or different.
Light name/team area, lower left corner has no border gap, and there's no dot near the right border about halfway up the photo.
If it's a cheap photocopy the Goodwin card or one like it was likely the source.

There is new tape, but the stains appear to be browned residue of older tape. I have a few cards and other items with similar stains, and getting the adhesive to dry and harden until the cellophane comes off takes time. Blown up, the thickness and occasional glossy spots show. If someone has an easy way to fake that, hats off to them.

None of that rules out an older fake that's not a photocopy, they've been around since at least 78, and I can't imagine wood was the only one done.

Bidders bid history doesn't exude much confidence in the originally talked about Ruth.

https://www.ebay.com/bfl/viewbids/13...p2047675.l2565

And there is an inordinate amount of wear on those other cards. Hard for me to tell on most of them.

Or so it appears. Notice, however, the seller has yet to receive any feedback on the ones he "sold" a couple of weeks ago.

Mike, you and Brian are dear friends, but I must disagree with the name plate area, E122s all have a dot matrix look in the bottom name plate area... otherwise my near complete set and my Ruth that resides in an SGC 3 are all fake.

I vote real (original) for the E122 Ruth with the tape all over it.

But hell there was one other time when I was wrong.... that is when I thought I was wrong about something.

Mike, please tell Brian hello for me and I miss you guys at the shows!

Good catch, Dan. I am sure I have handled a fair amount of E122s and forgot they have dot patterns. Here is a mislabeled E122 I used to own...
