Default Type 2 question

So I just picked up this type 2 gehrig photo which shows him in the 1930's and was developed in the 1930's so my question is how would they know when in the 1930's this was developed?? To me I consider it a type 1 but I'm sure others will disagree

The fact that theres no significant markings on the back that indicate the exact date and is in fact from the period of when it was taken has me confused on why its not a type 1.

It says 'circa 1930s' not 1930s. They probably either believed it was made some time later or were unsure so played it safe in the labeling. Maybe it's on thicker paper, which made them wonder.
