Default The Complete History of M116 Cards

Hi everyone,

I want this thread to be the most thorough M116 thread on any message board. Whatever you know about this set, please post it.

Tell us about the:
  • Nuances
    Rarest cards in the set
    Possible variations
    Checklist numbers
Also:
  • How the set came to exist, and for how long they were printed
    Where they were printed
Why they are Pastel and some have blue backgrounds.
Why the portraits are the same as T206
Why there are more in NM condition than T206

Please post photos and sources.

I would like to use this information to construct a thorough Wikipedia article and educate future collectors of M116. I think this set is a fantastic alternative to T206 due to the similarities and art work.

There is no Scot Reader M116 guide, so I figure this is the next best thing.

FYI - Tim Newcomb wrote what to this point is the authoritative article on M116s in a 2009 edition of Old Cardboard. He did extensive research on how the cards were released, the front/back combinations possible and the levels of rarity present in the issue. You can see some of the results of his research here:

1) go to oldcardboard.com. There is alot of information there.

2) Oldcardboard Magazine Issue # 18 did a story on the M116 set. 8 pages with tons of information.
