Default Best Storage Methods

Posted By: RobertS

Hi all--

I am trying to figure out the best type of binders to use for storing pre-war cards, photos, postcards, etc. -- the best ones I've seen so far are made by the likes of MJ Roop and Archival Methods and come with slipcases for each binder.

Which binders do you folks recommend?

Also -- the BIG debate: should binders be stored flat or standing (so as not have the cards bend or warp)?

By the way here are links to the two binder manufacturers I mention above:

http://www.archivalmethods.com

http://www.mjroop.com

And, no, I don't work for either company...just looking for an alternative for those goofy Ultra Pro binders out there these days from every dealer.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,

Robert S.

By the way, MJ Roop is the one that is advertising in the latest issue of Beckett Vintage Sports...

but I still put my archival pages with Mylar-sheathed cards in them in the oldest, rattiest 3-ring binders I can find.

But, like i said, the effect is really ruined by my stading all the binders up together in a stereo cabinet, protected by linen tablecloths. The cabinet sort of--draws the eye.

Have you ever had any of the cards bend or warp because the binders are standing in the stereo cabinet instead of lying flat?

I have always kept binders flat after reading one of the more obscure SCD books about collecting that suggested cards may warp when the binders are standing (unless there is constant pressure on the standing volume from either side).

I just took some high number 72s that came from vendor boxes out of the binder they have been in since the mid 80s. I have always stored my binders standing up and none of the cards had any warping. that is until a few weeks later. Man, talk about curl. Think that might be a function of having come from vendor boxes and having never been in a compressed situation.

I've been storing flat, but am concerned some cards on the bottom of the stack may get squashed or flattened, not to mention eventually geting stuck to their sheets. I've seen cards in screwdown holders get flattened too much.

Are you going to try to flatten the curled 1972s?

Also -- what about cig and candy cards: they seem too small to warp in a binder standing up...

Robert
