I have owned a full body verson of that Vance, it is a ball on the end of a rope like a speed bag he is punching. It is one of the weirdest photos I have ever seen and have no idea how he did not end up with the ball in his face constantly!

Aha! Like one of those wooden paddles with a rubber band and ball, except the paddle is either his fist or face? So weird. Love it. Thanks for the info!

Thank you. I recently finished reading Summer of '49 by David Halberstam in which Dimaggio and Henrich were front and center. When I saw the photo, it was an easy decision. I had been wanting a type 1 of Joe for a long time anyway.

Default Knothole Club Membership Card

Several years ago I read the Cincinnati Post follow up from the day after Johnny Vander Meer's 1st no-hitter against the Boston Braves on 6/11/38 at Cincinnati. While reading this recount, I discovered a factoid that I stored in my memory bank hoping to one day capitalize on it. Last night it finally showed up on eBay.

Most all recounts of this game have the paid attendance for the game at a miserly 5,814. However, Cincinnati Post newspaper coverage mentioned something that I thought was cool:
“The 10,311 (5,814 paid) Knothole Day fans roared their approval of the first no-hitter since 1919 when Hod Eller flipped one against the Cardinals.”

Last night, I found 11 year old Reds fan Wilson Neeley's 1938 Knothole Club Membership Card which will get added to the Vandy showcase. Mission accomplished!

Knothole Club members were allowed admission into 11 games in 1938 including the Saturday game played on June 11th where Vandy no-hit the Braves.
Hi Scott:
Great item to add to your amazing collection. Continued success in finding items on your want list...
Best Regards
Phil

Picked up these lineup cards from game 2 of the 1999 World Series. 2 HOF'ers and IMO a really cool piece from the middle of the Yankees dynasty.

First line-up cards that I own where the game is significant. Most of the cards I have in my collection are due to the manager being in the HOF.

You're welcome.

Photos have really got me interested lately. I am not sure what any/most are worth, but I'd really like to obtain a few.

Nice pickups! Cool that you got both teams from the same game.

Irv, check out RMY auctions. They have one going on right now. To get an idea of price, you can search all auction archives on the left side of the main page to see what stuff has sold for in the past. Rhys does a great job.

Oh ok, thanks. I have a Ruth photo with that on the back, never knew it was referred to as a slug.

Thanks!

Each manager and the umpire usually end up with a copy from both teams, but usually at least one of the two is a carbon copy (if not both) so it's pretty tough to find both handwritten copies together. Thankfully the legwork was done by someone before they got to me and I was able to buy them together
