Default Help Identifying St. Louis Browns (?) Postcard

Hi All,

I am posting in hope that some here may be able to help identity the players or the team on a postcard I own. From my findings it appears that the logo on the players’ sweaters is that of the 1911-1915 St. Louis Browns but the trail goes cold after that.

I’ve dug through a lot of images but haven’t been able to make positive IDs. I would assume that the image comes from Spring Training, but cannot say positively either way.

Does anyone here recognize any of these players? Thank you in advance for your help and thoughts.

Best,

Zach

One guy looks like Rube Waddell (bottom row, 2nd on the left). Maybe 1908-1910? But I could be wrong.

Rube Waddell is not in the photo. The sweater logo does match what is seen on the Browns uniform 1911-1914, so it could be them, but so far I can't match any faces.

Any chance bottom right is Bobby Wallace?

Big nose (too wide?), small mouth, big chin, and similar eyes. Never really seen a pic of Wallace smiling though so its hard to tell.

I think that Jimmy Austin may be top row, 2nd from right.

No - no Jimmy Austin or Bobby Wallace or any other well-known faces here.

Hi All,

Thank you for the responses so far. I certainly went through a few players in my head, including Austin and especially Wallace, but could not confirm anything — close but not close enough.

I also considered a college team but the players look too old, at least some of them.

If this really is a grouping of members of the St. Louis Browns is is really bad luck in the timing of the photo to not have one at least semi-recognizable face.

I did notice something new under close inspection — the player in the upper row, second from the left, has a different sweater on than the others. His sweater’s logo is similar but features an “S” with a giant bottom to the second portion, unlike the logo on the sweater just next to him. Here it is blown up:

I cannot find this logo anywhere.

Best,

Zach

The 'S' is the same on both sweaters; it is faded on the sweater to the left. The "giant bottom" is the base of the 'L', which loops around the bottom of the 'S'.

Absolutely correct on the logos.

Also, with respect to "I certainly went through a few players in my head, including Austin and especially Wallace, but could not confirm anything — close but not close enough."

No - really they are not close at all.
