Default 1988 Topps Keith Comstock Yellow Name / Letters Variation

I recently located a copy of this after many years of searching for it. I first saw mention of it in Dick Gilkeson's 1990 or 1991 book. Does anyone own a copy?

It's definitely among the more elusive of the cataloged junk-era variations, the others being:

1987 Topps Dave Lopes #4 with 1985 copyright on back
1989 Topps Tony Oliva #665 with blacked-out copyright on back
1990 Topps Jeff King #434 with no white on back (all yellow)

I've seen the Jeff King but would love to see pics or get some information or sales history on the others.

I will post a photo once I have it in hand.

If I remember correctly, 1988 has a few yellow name subjects, Barry Jones and Ed Romero are others but Comstock is the only one catalogued as far as I know.

Any info on the 1987 Lopes?

Also, I used to have a pic of the Oliva black-out but that was lost with my last computer. I'd love to see another copy.

Default Comstock

Thanks for posting that. I had heard about it but had only looked for it off and on since I thought it might be an urban legend

I remember opening box after box of 1988 Topps trying to find one of those. Had no idea that I probably never had a chance...I am sure the boxes I saw weren't from the print runs that included the error.

So, there are three different Comstock's :

Blue team - Yellow name
Blue team - White name
White team - White name

Right, but the yellow one is apparently pretty rare. I had heard of it but not seen it until JC posted his

I was looking through some 88 Topps wrong backs today and found a Keith Comstock. Unfortunately he is on the back and Tony Pena is on the front.

This is correct.

So far, no 'White team - Yellow name' version has been reported. Probably unlikely since the yellow is the result of excess ink affecting the changed (blue Padres) printing.

Barry Jones is listed as having the same variation but I have yet to see a copy.
