Default Have seen a nice Bresnahan one

Hi Doug,

There was a nice one of Roger Bresnahan on eBay years ago. It was on there for quite some time. I debated on whether or not to pick it up, but if I remember correctly the seller had a very high shipping charge due to the items large size. I regret not grabbing it.

The funny thing about these kinds of items is that they are very easy, and fairly cheap to ship.

Any large supplements or newspapers, if sandwiched between paper and/or plastic, will generally roll and ship in a mailing tube safely. I also fill the middle of the tube with packing peanuts.

I'll have to explore the interwebs for a picture of that Bresnahan.

Thanx,
Doug

I once won on eBay a large photograph by and from a famous Vogue magazine photographer and he mailed it rolled in a tube. I figured it if sending his own photo rolled was good enough for him, it was good enough for me.

While scouring the interwebs I found another Globe-Democrat page to add to our checklist. It's from Aug 22, 1915 and it's of Christy Mathewson.

Not sure how I had missed it before, since it was included in a Huggins & Scott auction in 2012, not too long after this thread started. If you have this one, I would be interested in acquiring it from you...

Stolen picture below, and here is the updated checklist :

April 25 - Cartoon about teams taking NL pennant
May 30 - Tommy Long (most popular ballplayers)
June 27 - Carl Weilman & Eddie Plank (popular players)
July 4 - Two Of This Season's Stars (front of section)
July 4 - Feds Team (back of section)
July 11 - Lee Meadows & Urban Faber (pitching sensations)
July 18 - Ty Cobb & Jake Daubert (batting stars)
July 25 - Larry Doyle & Lee Magee (batting stars)
Aug 1 - Bennie Kauff & Vic Saier (base stealers)
Aug 8 - Tris Speaker & George Burns (outfield)
Aug 15 - Rabbit Maranville & Eddie Collins (both sides of second sack)
Aug 22 - Ray Schalk & Frank Snyder (catchers)
Aug 29 - Altrock, Schaefer & Jennings (coaches)

Those are all from 1915 and noted as "Color Sport Supplement" with the date at the top (except the July 4 Feds Team).

There are also color pages from :
Sept 20, 1908 - Parade of players with bats on shoulders & crowd
Apr 9, 1909 - Cartoon entitled "Play Ball" with a King watching game w/peanuts & scorecard
Aug 11, 1912 - Drawing of kids playing titled "A Home Run"
(ADD) Aug 15, 1915 - Christy Mathewson
June 6, 1915 - Baseball cartoon "Bert Bush's First Game"
Sept 12, 1915 - Charles Comiskey (owner)
Sept 19, 1915 - Hank O'Day (umpire)

Default Checklist complete(!) (?)

With help of my travel agent, who has an account to newspapers.com, I was able to add to (and I believe complete) the catalog of these issues today :

These are the covers of and headlined "Sport Section Extraordinary" at the top with the date :
April 4, 1915 Political Cartoon (baseball)
April 11, 1915 Baseball Day Dreams

These are the covers of and headlined "Color Sport Supplement" at the top with the date :
April 18, 1915 x - not baseball
April 25, 1915 Cartoon about teams taking NL pennant
May 2, 1915 x - not baseball
May 9, 1915 Jack Miller
May 16, 1915 Harry Sallee
May 23, 1915 Derrill Pratt
May 30, 1915 Tommy Long
June 6, 1915 John Tobin
June 13, 1915 Bert Shotton
June 20, 1915 Grover Lowdermilk / William Doak
June 27, 1915 Carl Weilman / Eddie Plank
July 4, 1915 Otis Crandall / Zinn Beck
July 11, 1915 Lee Meadows / Urban Faber
July 18, 1915 Ty Cobb / Jake Daubert
July 25, 1915 Larry Doyle / Lee Magee
Aug 1, 1915 Bennie Kauff / Vic Saier
Aug 8, 1915 Tris Speaker / George Burns
Aug 15, 1915 Rabbit Maranville / Eddie Collins
Aug 22, 1915 Ray Schalk / Frank Snyder
Aug 29, 1915 Altrock / Schaefer / Jennings
Sept 5, 1915 Herzog, Huggins / Bresnahan / Carrigan
Sept 12, 1915 George Sisler
Sept 19, 1915 Mamaux / Betzel / Koob
Sept 26, 1915 Joe Wood / Grover Alexander

These are in color on the back of the "Color Sport Supplement". All except the Feds Team are noted as "Superlatives in Sport" or "One of Sport's Superlatives" :
July 4, 1915 Feds Team
Aug 8, 1915 Harry Howell
Aug 22, 1915 Christy Mathewson
Sept 12, 1915 Charles Comiskey (owner)
Sept 19, 1915 Hank O'Day (umpire)
Sept 26, 1915 John Tener (league pres)

The 9 issues between and including April 11 thru June 6 also have a color full page "Bert Bush's First Game" cartoon.

I believe these to be the complete listing of all full page color baseball pages issued by the St. Louis Globe-Democrat in 1915. Apologies if I missed any.

I am still looking for copies of all of these shown below, and a few others.

Wow, those are truly gorgeous. Congrats on finding four new ones!

Do you plan to get them professionally graded? I think PSA is introducing a super-sized slab that will work perfectly for these. Not sure about the wait-time but think it's now under a year, and might help to legitimize the collection.

Just kidding about that last part. Great stuff!

Default Don't feel bad about bumping this thread, Doug.

I've never seen these before and living in St. Louis I am very surprised. Post all that you find. They are awesome and your scans are appreciated.

These are amazing. The Ty Cobb & Jake Daubert is fantastic, I would love to add it to my Daubert collection. Anyone know if more than one copy exists and if any are available? Anyone seen any of them recently or have more info about the set, in general? Thanks!

Sorry to say that while I do have extra copies of a couple, the Cobb / Daubert isn't one of them.

I have been looking for others for years and haven't seen any others.

Doug
