Default old judge pricing question

Posted By: bigfish

I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL THESE CARDS BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MUCH THESE GO FOR.

I am picking up 3 psa 7 old judges, 2 psa 6 old judges.
What is a fair price to pay for these assuming they are commons?

AGAIN,
I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL THESE. I AM TRYING TO GAIN INFORMATION BEFORE I BUY THEM SO I DON'T GET SCREWED.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Depends on the condition of the cards in the holders.

It would also depend on the meaning of "common". Two guys wanting (needing) the same OJ card can get ugly.

There are many different type of old judges you need to be more exact in the type of card it is, I am assuming that you are referring to a N172 set and in that case lately PSA 6 commons are going for around $600 and PSA 7's are getting in the $1100 neighborhood.

Robert,

I must respectfully disagree. Having tracked most OJ auctions on Ebay and also sold quite a few (and participated in most of the large off-line auctions), "common" PSA 6's can be purchased in the $400-$450 range and "common" PSA 7's can be purchased in the $600-$700 range. The prices you are quoting are prices that are direct retail - not auction. There are however large price spikes which can bring prices in the ranges you were talking about when two collectors duel it out or when the pose or player is not a "common." My 2 cents worth.

Don J,

I have also been tracking N172's on Ebay and the auction houses and the price I quoted is what they are going for in auction. This does not mean that you can't find them for better prices out in the market which you can. If the owner where to sell it tomorrow on Ebay they should expect to get in the area the prices I quoted. But we don't know all the specs of the cards that he is talking about so it is not an exact science.

Sorry, don't mean to quibble but I don't want Toby to pay an excessive price for the OJ's that he is attempting to purchase.

Toby, here are the last recorded PSA 6 (or SGC 80) and SGC 84 grades that were either found in closed Ebay auctions or in the last American Memorabilia auction which ended earlier this week.

PSA 6/SGC 80: 450.00, 450.00, 455.00, 489.95, 567.63, 448.13, 418.25, 651.25, 478.00, 448.00

SGC 84: 657.25, 717.00, 597.50, 717.00, 684.75, 622.50, 537.75, 597.50, 567.63, 622.50

Granted, this is a poor statistical analysis based upon many factors but it should give you something to work with.

Don you are correct about the prices, right on the money as usual.

In 2005 there have been:

- 61 PSA 6 graded 'commons', for an average sell price of $477
- 44 PSA 7 graded 'commons', for an average sell price of $658

We'll have much more to announce on tracking vintage prices in the upcoming months, stay tuned....

Dave,

Do you have more collected data on graded (and even non-graded) OJs? Have you broken this down to ebay and all other auctions?

Don's prices are definetly accurate and more inline with retail sales as well. I sold and bought many N712's.

David I look forward to your guide. I think it will end up to be one of the best and most percise yet. Please let me know if you need any help.

Amazing thread! Not once did anyone ask who the players were or what the photographs looked like. Are you buying the holder or buying the card?

Jay

You absolutely "Hit the Nail on the Head" with your comments.

Many in this hobby has become obsessed over "Plastics" rather
than "Cardboard". This reminds me of that scene in The Graduate.
Where Murray Hamilton kept repeating to Dustin Hoffman...."the
money is in "Plastics..Plastics you have to get into Plastics".

That was in a 1967 movie....what a prediction....Ha !

Not sure who the players are. All commons. I think one is Cap Anson wearing only a bow tie while lying on a bearskin rug.

I am finding out who the players are today. I will list later.

Bowtie and bearskin rug? Hmmm.....

I have the Cap Anson with argyle sweater on a futon.....

Would love to see a photo of the bowtie and bearskin rug version though.

Tom,

That isn't really Anson, it's Anson's head on someone elses body...

Fish,

Are you sure he has a bow tie on? All other Anson on bear skin rug cards don't have him with a bow tie. Perhaps you've stumbled upon a new pose...

Jay,

This is absolutely a discussion about plastic and not the merits of the individual cards.

i think dave forgot to mention in his pricing that those are for cards where the player is not wearing those ugly poka dot ties, in which case the cards are worth less then the price he quoted

Don--Are you saying that these valuation figures are for a card with no scarcity premium and one with an "average" photo? If this is your base valuation level that you would adjust off for a specific card then I can understand what you are saying. However, it would be a foolish person who would assign a particular value to all cards of a certain PSA grade.

I believe the poster just wants to know the "base" rate for a common OJ in a certain condition, to the extent such animals exist. He stated he did not want to get screwed--he did not ask for specific valuations. In that regard, a report of recent sales seems fine to me. FWIW and to add to the data, I just bought a pair of SGC 84 common OJs-McKean and Zimmer, at $612.50 each. I suppose he could use the provided information unwisely and turn down a couple of spotted ties because they're priced slightly higher than recent "common" sales, but in general the info should be useful.

I trust the buyer is happy with what he sees in the way of picture clarity and contrast. If you want to take the time to share your knowledge about player and pose scarcities of what might otherwise appear to be commons, I'm sure we would all appreciate it--I know I would.

Get ready for the emails. There's blood in the water now.

Know this is what Jay was talking about there are a few tougher cards in there but not really super rare.

The Kilroy is a better card as well.

Now for a proper appraisal you would have to describe the photo quality as well. Like a Kilroy in a 7 with a dark contrast photo might be like $1,200 but a really light photo would be more like $800.

I really don't collect these in high grade but I'm sure a lot of the slab savvy people will be able to help you out.

Trevor

The Willard Maines, if "hands at neck" pose, I will guarantee that you will profit from its purchase.
