Default Counterfeits running amok

Andy Broome from Beckett tweeted earlier today:

"1st grading day of the new year and I've already seen 3 fake '52 Topps Mantles."

Sheesh.

I agree, but I kind of get that one. It was an actual Topps release, I don't know production numbers but I'm assuming somewhat limited, and it may be the closest some collectors could get to owning a 52 Mantle. Kind of like those Mantle reprints and refractors that were inserted into packs of topps one year in the 90s.

I guess but it's just hard for me to imagine paying almost 2k for slabbed reprints, authorized or not.

They are asking 1800 OBO for this sketch but I was thinking it was a reprint. (that's almost 2k in my book). I am not paying anything for reprints. Not sure if anyone is or not. But It sounds like there might be some reprint collectors out there. Fine by me. It's not my money.

LOL that is a BAD sketch gets the eyes all wrong. Good or bad, that should not be authenticated IMO.

My avatar of Christy is a better sketch than that.

Why would Beckett authenticate that? Is it what exactly? Isn't the whole point of authentication that you are supposedly doing a comparison and confirming that it matches up to some known entity that is already in the marketplace and is therefore authentic?

people do buy 2nd printed books...all books that are printed in second production are all reprints...plus there have been sales of orginal waterfont property cards for 50-100k and then resold a year later at a 20k loss...id rather lose 2k on a reprint..

I can't imagine that sketch card will sell for anywhere close to 1800, 1/1 or not.
