Rhett,

Thanks for this checklist. This is an enormous help to all of us who are interested in E121-80.

If you could add the working Type 1 normal back and Type 1 reverse back checklists for the sake of completeness it would be very much appreciated.

Also, I have noticed over the years that certain subjects exist with or without a dash between the position and team in the bottom line of the caption.

Here is an example without dash:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-E121-Am...item5af8fe67f5

and another:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-E121-80...item2c6f0b4703

Have you tracked that by any chance?

Thanks.

I recently noticed that Pep Young can be shown as:

(1) "Pep" Young
(2) Pep" Young

where the second variation is missing the leading ".

I have Young w/o the leading ", shown below:

Derek, you have a good eye!

I have known about the variation for a little while and have one of each. I believe it is a true variation (just hadn't advertised it as such yet as it took me some time to find the version missing the first ") as I have found multiple copies of each. The version with both of the quotes around the name is MUCH easier to find. The "Pep" Young I have with a Type 3 back has the corrected two "" around the name.

Also cementing the fact that it is a legit variation is that I have found both one " and two "" in the W575-1 set as well (blank backed E121 cards), also I have seen a Holsum Bread card with the one "

It would appear that at the beginning of the E121-80 print run the first " was missing or lost and was subsequently "fixed". JUST FYI: Both have the Type 1 regular back.

Scot,

It will take me a bit to get the Regular Type 1 checklist together but I can do that if there is demand for it. I have never bothered cataloging the reverse Type 1 back as I don't consider it a new back or anything just a printing variation within the Type 1 set, Type 3 cards are also found with a reverse back by the way.

About the dash-no dash thing... I do keep track it but only when a single player is found with both versions. For example every Duffy Lewis I have ever seen is missing the "-" but would be very interested in a Duffy Lewis that had one as that would be considered by me (and probably others) to be a new variation. Below is a relatively new discovery that features a George Whitted both "with" and "without" the Dash line...this one is a true variation within the master set. FYI: Both have the Type 1 regular backs.

Thanks for the update Rhett...E121 series of 80 is certainly the most complex set of the 1920's , and it keeps on dishing up more intrique as time goes on.

Agreed Brian. I am very tempted to go after the master set . . . but then there is Meadows . . . and now O'Leary!

Down side of buying both Meadows and O'Leary (plus Gaston, Frisch, Huggins and a host of others when they all appear so close together) is contemplating what part of your collection you're going to be selling off over the next few months to pay for them.

You could send O'Leary and Gaston to California for a long vacation. Palm Springs is really quite nice in the winter months compared to where you reside.Kevin Andrews. :-)

Rhett, thanks for doing all this and sharing. I thought the regular set was tough enough, much less the Master Set! Good God!

Sorry to have been on "hobby vacation" and missed the epic sale. Sounds spectacular.

Hey Rhett,

I have an Everett Scott with a Type 2 back that I didn't see in your list.

Thanks for all of the work you've done with this interesting and under appreciated set.

Jason, if you have a scan let me look at it. Every card that I have listed has been visualized by me (front and back scans) so I can check caption and everything else to assure we aren't missing anything (I don't anticipate anything new with the Scott but just want to confirm that). Edited to add: I just looked at your Collection Album in the tagline of your posts and saw the Everett Scott type 2. Consider it confirmed!

I appreciate you looking through your stuff, that should bring the Type 2 to 70 different.

We should be getting to end of these lists over the next few years as we start approaching 80 in the type 2 & Type 3 sets (I guess there could be more than 80 in each but not really anticipating the print runs were larger than that.

Bringing back an old thread that could be valuable.

I've found sources like the Standard Catalog and TCDB can miss things that an avid collector of the series knows. This thread confirms the lack of a Cobb batting Series 80 and my wallet is grateful.

1. Any updates to this checklist?

2. If anyone has the Veach arms folded Series of 80, I'd love to see a copy.

Rhett's list in this thread is the latest that I know about. There might have been a couple, or a few, new additions that have been identified, but I did not note them. Perhaps Rhett has something to add...
