Default Reg. Issue and traded card, same year, same team

The first two that come to mind are '81 Raines and '82 Ripken. Anyone know why they did that? Seems that the traded issues defeated the purpose of the traded set.

There is one for Valenzuela as well ‘81, I think. I always figured it was a way to fill out the trades set and give the rookies that share a card with someone else a card of their own.

As well as be able to use the hot rookies getting their first "solo" Topps card as a selling point.

In the early days of the "traded" sets, there was a controversy about whether such cards, and first Topps cards of players who didn't make it in that year's base set, were "legitimate" rookie cards because they were not available in packs, only in the sets.

Yep. That XRC designation was subject of hot debate at the shop.

XRC as designed back in the day was for traded cards issued BEFORE a regular issue wax packed card. That all changed with Upper Deck in 1989 in which you could get the last series (701-800) mixed with the lower numbers.

We spent countless hours back in the day arguing all sides of that issue and trying to keep up at Beckett.

There was controversy even about whether "Topps Traded" were legitimate cards because they didn't come in packs and weren't offered at retail, only to hobby dealers.
