Hinchman or Hinchman?

I recently picked up this E254 of Harry Hinchman (as listed in the guides). After comparing the Colgan's to Harry's (Toledo) T206 and brother Bill's (Cleveland)T206; I believe that it is actually Bill pictured on the E254. Bill was 5'11", 190 while Harry was the same height but only weighed in at 165. The Hinchman pictured on the Colgan's definitely appears stockier. I was only able to pinpoint Bill playing with Columbus in 1914, but his major league record has a gap between 1910-1914. Obviously nothing of great importance, but the kind of thing that makes our hobby a bit more interesting. Opinions and info appreciated.

I disagree. The lack of knowledge in this hobby does not increase its interestingness, it detracts from it. Everything is a major research project. What is most seriously lacking in our hobby is a compendium of research already conducted, perhaps broken down by specific sets. Sources from which such a compilation can be assembled include the Old Juydge, Trader Speaks, VCBC, Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, and other specialized sources. There are numerous research efforts going on at all times geared to generate enhanced understanding and insight. It seems surprising to me that the records of Negro Leaguers can be compiled with relative certainty, while we do not know who manufactured the w517 set in 1931.

Oh wait, thats right: there is no whining in card collecting, sorry. Im just turning into a grumbly old man.(not that old, but plenty grumbly).

I spend my entire day doing/reviewing research as a biologist and a student advisor. Working in a competitve field where almost every niche and area of specialization is occupied can be stressful at times; so collecting baseball cards is a release for me. Missing information, data gaps, and errors are testament that it once was really just a game. The "interest" to which I was referring is attempting to piece together the fragmented information relative to careers of these players (using our cards as an impetus). Those little mysteries often extend to the cards themselves. I'm just trying to have a little fun and possibly correct a small bit of potential misinformation. So Gil....who is it? Bill or Harry?

I think the E254 and the Toledo Hinchman are the same guy. The mouth looks identical and while the e254 displays a fuller face, I think your identification is in error. Sorry.

Although all of the statements above appear valid, my vote is that the Colgan's player is Bill because a casual survey shows style consistency among players of that area. Specifically, players who wear their collars turned up, almost always maintain that style.

Without attempting a facial identification, I can add that there exists a T5 Pinkerton (No. 1101) that depicts both Hinchmans as minor leaguers, Harry with Toledo and Bill with Columbus. It's not definitive, but I'd say pretty persuasive.
