Default t206 murray error yellow background help?

Posted By: pete

I just purchased what I think is the t206 murray error but the background is clearly orange, not yellow?!?! Is this the "error" card? Does anyone have a scan of the yellow background card? Thanks!

Pete in MN

Red Murray cards come with either a red/orange background for the batting pose or a blue background for the portrait.Ive never seen any other color except on proofs and those cards have different color backgrounds because they werent done.On his batting pose the color can be anywhere from red to orange and any shade in between but that kind of variance can be said for any card in the set

Are you sure the card just did not fade...Red is the most sensitive color..look at the Ruth card in the Recent Picks ups thread

thanks guys...I've seen the Ruth. In the new SCD price guide under t206 errors they list under variations a yellow background murray card. I guess this is what I was referring to. I bought the murray card(s) under the impression the orange one was the variation?! Was I duped or stupid or naieve? It was graded by sgc as the 1st graded too!

Pete- GAI seemingly grades everything as "First graded" I don't know if that means the first time a particular card was submitted for grading or the first time they graded that type of card, in other words, the first time they graded THAT Murray or the first time they graded ANY T206 Murray.
In any event, the orange back Murray is not a variation, it is a color freak. There are several cards in the T206 set which have orange backgrounds instead of red, none are variations, I have owned a couple through the years and have one now, a Hoffman I believe. They are neat because of the color difference but I haven't found any of them to have a premium.

I don't think there are a lot of people in here that put a premium on color variations and most of them are pretty knowledgable. I did not get many positive responses on my yellow orange background color variation of a T206 red portrait Ty Cobb. I personally think they are neat to collect and may even have a niche market for them somewhere.

As it has been explained to me, for any card a "First Graded" designation is assigned to the first time a particular card is assigned a particular grade. In other words there is a T206 Cobb Red Background 3(VG)-First Graded, 4(VGEX)-First Graded, 5(EX)-First Graded. It's all rather meaningless.

Hi Pete.
The pure yellow murray (batting) is really a striking difference from the red. Something like the yellow would definitely be of interest to collectors of t206 errors/variations (whatever you want to call em') but many darker colors often show a small range of variance from dark to slightly lighter.

That is a very nice orange red portrait though.
Robert

By the way, it was probably just the first graded red murray. It's kind of funny that his name is Red in this instance.

Over the years I have had several YELLOW background T206 cards.
One was Delahanty (normally GREEN backgnd). The others I do not
recall as I traded them to a friend who collects errors & vari-
ations many years ago.
These cards were produced by a 4-color printing process; and the
first pass in the process is always the YELLOW inking. So, these
color errors are simply the result of an incomplete printing run.

For R. Ellingsen,

I have two YELLOW-ORANGE T206 Ty Cobbs exactly like yours.
These Cobbs didn't receive the full "inking" process that would
have resulted in the normally RED background card. I got my first
one about 20 years ago, and now between the 3 we have and one
more that was on Ebay recently, there are at least 4 in the hobby.
I wonder how many more are out there ?

This T206 Cobb color variation is at least as rare as the
Wagner; and it even has the same background color ! HA !
Anyhow, the way I view it, is I have 5 different Cobbs in my set.
