Why does it seem like there are never any available? Do collectors get buried with them or something? I haven't been looking for them for any great length of time and I don't search for them on a regular basis, but out of all the OJ's on ebay at any given time there are usually no Louisville players. On occasion an auction house will have a group of them and they aren't exactly cheap from what I've seen. There are some big names, like Browning and Cross, and some cool names, like "Chicken" Wolf and Dude Esterbrook, but that can't be the whole reason. Are they just plain tough or just heavily collected or both? I know people are tight lipped regarding OJ's, but any info would be great.

I've never studied the Louisville cards, but I can tell you if they're anything like Omaha cards they are just plain tough.

I'll fetch a few tomorrow and post scans. But I've not added any to my few for several years. So I hear you...

Why Bobby,

I knew if I ever got a Browning it would cost a bit, but if some folks out there have TWO Brownings it makes it tougher on the rest of us to get just one.

Impressive!!

are tougher than the norm. Collected them for quite a while (living in Louisville) and had about 25 when I sold most of my OJ's off a few years back. I had (3) Brownings. The mgr card of Kelly (I think) is probably the toughest or one of the toughest. I've been told only a couple are known. Shannon is another one of the tougher cards as well. I had 2-3 N173 OJ Cabinets and 7 'proofs' as well. 6 on Scholten Studios mounts from St. Louis and one on a Wybrant mount from Louisville. Bought 4 of the proofs from an Oregon trail auction and 2 of them from Lipsets. Don't really remember where the Wybrant cabinet came from. It was Farmer Vaughan I believe. Liked the Wybrant cabinet the most. Will post some of the proof pictures here later when I have access to my external hard drive with photos on it. I don't know the tough poses from the team and I seriously doubt any light will be shed on that in this thread by anyone in the know but as with all of the OJ's there are tough poses of easy players that are closely held to the vest of just a few with the knowledge.

Tomney.......not Vaughan. Only 'proof' I've seen on a Wybrant cabinet mount. Sure others exist because many of the Vaughan poses have the same look and backdrop as this Tomney....

Thanks Tom. Awesome cabinet. I know no one is going to give up their closely held secrets about the tough poses and I wouldn't expect them to do that. Just wanted to get a sense of where they are in general and maybe see some pics.

Well I'm worried, I thought I had 3 of these, can only find one.

Red Ehret won 25 games for Louisville in 1890. He won 139 games during his 11 year career. 'tis a shame the cigarette portion of the card was trimmed off.

Here is my one and only so far. Ehret and Stratton combined to win 59 games and throw almost 800 innings in 1890. You think they burned these guys out or what?

How tough are Louisville subjects compared to Chicago Maroon subjects? Any thoughts?

Bruce--They are both tougher than average but I think in general Maroons are tougher. The most important point though is that there is tremendous variation within each. There are some Maroons, like Schoeneck, that are not much tougher than average and others, like Boyd, who are very tough.

Can anyone out there post a scan of the Dude Esterbrook? Is the Kelly a portrait in street clothes? If not, are there any portraits?

Paul

take a look at the PSA set registry, mine is the top set and includes a PSA 6 esterbrook and there is a photo of it there.

This card is also available for trade if you have other PSA old judges that I need

Paul--Kelly-Manager has two poses, a portrait looking left and a full length photo with his coat over his left arm. As far as I know each has only one known copy.
Eric--Nice start on the set. The script Esterbrook card in your registry set, however, is not a Louisville card.

Paul,

Here's an Esterbrook, but it's not Louisville. There are Esterbrook Louisville cards out there.

Great stuff Tom...thanks for showing them. And how can anyone tell what team that Esterbrock above is from? Is the team name faded or was it never on the card?

Think his other poses are with Indianapolis.........I'm sure the Louisville on the Jersey and on the photo were etched onto the negative.......

I'm asking about the one Fred posted...the N172. I should have been more specific.

Fabulous cards, a great but tough team to collect.

The N172 Script cards of Esterbrook (2 different) show him in a NY Giants uniform. Esterbrook has a total of 7 poses of which less than half can be found with Louisville. As stated above, 2 of the 7 poses were taken as a NY Giant in 1886. Then at least 4 of the remaining 5 poses as an Indianapolis Hoosier in 1888. The final and 7th pose my actually have been taken while he was a Louisville Colonel. The other poses that show him with Louisville are "team change" cards. He also has some 1890 NY Giant "team change" cards. Esterbrook did a lot of bouncing around. Jay Miller may be able to shed further light on his cards.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Dan--Script cards do not show teams other than what may be on the players jersey. Esterbrook was on New York at the time the script cards were issued.

Tom--Do you have a duplicate of the Browning cabinet that you'de like to trade? LOL

Just like to add that after looking at the 7th pose from Levin's website, it is apparent that it, a Louisville card, is based on a Indianapolis photo. So all of Esterbrook's Louisville cards are "team change" cards.

Joe Gonsowski

After looking at this thread I've come to the conclusion that Louisville can't be that tough to collect... look how many scans were posted! There's some pretty jaw dropping stuff posted.

Dude!!

Fantastic cabinets. Thanks for all the info guys, great stuff. Does anyone have an image of either of the Kelly manager cards? Is there an N173 version of the Kelly pose confirmed?

Thanks Jay. More rookie/dumb questions to follow.

Can anyone help me out with Stratton poses? I know there are five different, but I've only seen these three: Batting, Pitching-hand at side, Pitching-hand in front. I think Tom gave me a list of the poses awhile back and I either misplaced it or deleted the info.
