Default 1932/33 Babe Ruth Taub Clothiers Premium

1932/33 Babe Ruth Taub Clothiers Premium photo. It has a blank (can't tell for sure as it's skinned) back and looks like it was glued onto something and skinned off. It is one of those pieces you see for 4+ yrs on ebay and then finally decide to buy it. It is approx 8 x 10 and a real photo. If anyone has anymore information about it, it would be appreciated. Relatively speaking I thought it was cheap at around $250, but I like it anyway.....

Looks like there is a similar, but larger (11x14) premium that was sold by LOTG a while ago: Link

Nice! Reminds me of the ‘51 photo at Toots Shore’s restaurant.

I collect Taub premiums.

The one that LOTG sold is a store display with an easel back. That is the format you typically see.

Typical is a misnomer: they are quite uncommon. The same image found its way into a postcard, which also helps date the premium to 1932:

The PC is rare.

I looked at the one Leon bought for quite a while. It is in a size I'd not seen before for that particular image, but there is another premium in a similar size:

I also noticed the different caption across the top of Leon's as compared to the others, and the different name style. My guess is that the image and art were repurposed.

As for the back, that was my hesitation in buying it. The one with Vance and McGraw is a photo on heavy paper. I don't think Leon's was skinned but I do suspect that it was mounted to something for framing purposes. The ones I've played with that are on thicker cardboard with a glossy plastic-like coating. Here is another I acquired recently which dates to a few years later, also easel backed and larger format:

I suspect there are more premiums to be found; Taub was very into the athlete endorsements. Here's the other PC I've found:

Regardless of the back, Leon's item is a very nice piece.

Default Under Each Name

Just wanted to point out that Leons premium has a description underneath almost all of the athletes names... Whereas the others pictured only have three titles under the names.

That helps date Leon's item: Sharkey held the title from June 21, 1932 – June 29, 1933. He beat Schmeling and lost to Carnera. The PC is postmarked June 16, 1932, so the large premium predates the fight. Leon's item has to have been created after the Schmeling fight.

Here's a later Taub sign with baseball content:

Since it has Joe D in it twice and is titled World Series Heroes, it must date to October 1936 or later.

Actually that is how I dated it, looked at when Sharkey was champ and used those years... BTW, yes, the back of my premium looks like it was completely peeled from something. That didn't really bother me as long as the premium is real, which it is.
Thanks to those posting in this thread and sharing. Interesting stuff.
