Default Definitely Honus???

So I recently won an Ebay auction I am pretty happy about, however, I wanted a little bit of confirmation from here (I struggle with the whole face-recognition thing). Is the player featured here definitely Honus Wagner (as it has been sold as (link below)? To me, it looks good but I just wanted to hear the opinion of some experts. Thanks again! -Frank

Default Pennant

What looks like the same image with some detail added is identified on a Chicago Whales pennant as Joe Tinker. See http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/..._fall/854.html

Although the jawline is a bit like Wagner, it looks like a Red Sox uniform. I was thinking Heinie Wagner, but I just saw his mug and it isn't him. Could just be a model.

i remember this was on a cover of an old vcbc, presumably with an article. probably one on ebay to check, or even on B/S/T here.

I agree with Fred....

maybe for licensing reasons, if it was Honus Wagner, the uniform pictured does not appear close to the uniform in this link:

Sorry, but it doesn't look like Wagner to me.

I think the nose is too narrow. Honus had a bit of a bulb at the end. The guy in the picture doesn't. It appears Honus also has a bump on the bridge of his nose. The artwork doesn't.

How is this even a discussion? It's artwork, not a photo, and totally generic.
Large nose and big chin (a very un-Wagner-like cleft chin, at that) make for, at best,
the slightest (deliberately slight) passing resemblance to Honus...

That's actually why I posted this for discussion. If the artwork (even if it was made somewhat generically) was modeled after Honus (even if it were a deliberately slight resemblance), as a collector, I would look at it as a Honus piece. To me it looked like him but following these responses, I am thinking I probably just saw Joe Jackson in my toast again!

Hi Frank,
I just responded to your email, but now that I read through the thread, I see the majority do not believe it is Wagner. I always assumed that's who it was when that issue of VCBC came out, but never discussed it with the publisher Dennis Purdy. Looks like Wagner to me, but since it is a drawing based on a photograph, it may have a lost a little something in the translation.

The first image reminds me of Dolph Lundgren. But, of course, it couldn't possibly be him.

I am now perusing my copy of VCBC issue #12...Aaron Seefelt is offering a cobb w/cobb back...pls call...Our own Barry Sloate has 7 uzits and 1 red hindu donlin batting for sale...the donlin is $250. An article on REA's record setting auction where a crease free Wags sold for $119 and a 14' Balt Int'l Ruth for 27K...as well as the 5 cobb/cobb backs...what an auction!!!!

As well as a great article on 19th c trade cards...overall a great issue...chock full of great stuff...BUT...there is no mention whatsoever of the image gracing the cover.

Sorry, but in the immortal words of Bluto Blutarsky, "nothing's over... 'til we say it's over."
Not Wagner... not Tinker... but either Honus O'Brian or Honus Harrelson.

Now that's funny.

This very much reminds me of the Marquard Youth's Companion that has been known as Babe Ruth Youth's Companion forever. We found the exact same pose and some folks still don't believe it. Whatcha' gonna do?

I'm not sure but I don't think Josh Groban was born then..............

My vote......generic artwork meant to kinda look like a lot of dudes.....like the matchbox that's supposed to be Ted Williams or the baseball bat pencils that are supposed to be Lou Gehrig. Generic....generic....generic.....

These are sold all the time as Ted Williams matchboxes even though they don't say anything about him on them. Ted Williams style of batting stance but still a generic player..........

+1.

Generic, but based on Honus Wagner. Just not a very accurate likeness.

+2?

So far that's what I'm going with- for my personal collection, Wagner- if I ever were going to sell it, there wouldn't be a name attached to it.

p.s. awesome photo shopping! I feel almost as accomplished as the 'owner'; of a different Wagner on this forum!

But to be honest, Joe Tinker would work too! Honestly, I have contacted and a lot of people who think it's Wagner and a lot of people who think it's Tinker (from that pennant). Either way, I love the artwork and I would be happy with a Hall of Famer like Joe Tinker with a..what's that Wikipedia?..262 LIFETIME BATTING AVERAGE AND 31 CAREER HOMERS??? OH JEEZE, COME ON GUYS, ITS DEFINITELY HONUS RIGHT???

My first thought as well, but then I realized that just about every player back then (Wagner, Tinker, whoever) was probably twice the bunter today's players are. Ugly or not, these guys got it done.

NOPE! But I must admit, that threw a monkey wrench in my thoughts at the time. I just found this; apparently, a lot of different pennants those years featured the same image (link below). Tinker never played for the Braves.
