with staining on CJ's. I've seen similar cards with similar staining level be in 4's.

I am the seller of this card.
Some imperfections such as uneven edges or corners are due to scanning only.
This is a beautiful card and looks much better in person.
thanks for your interest.

The back of the card has more spots than a leopard; looks like someone spilled coffee over it. I would not grade it better than good in that condition. Yet there isn't even an ST qualifier.

I was a little surprised this only graded a 40. But, I guess it depends on the grader.

in the lower grades... eye appeal really becomes way more important than the technical grade

I skimmed the websites of the psa, gai and sgc and couldn't tell, but do any of the major grading companies provide (even only if at least in theory) that the grader of the cards will be unaware of who submitted them?

I'm assuming not, can anyone can advise or confirm?

Thanks,

Max

They all provide that, at least in theory. At PSA, I think, if you watch the video, the submission is processed first, and the grader only gets the cards, without knowing who submitted them. Of course - there are many ways around this scenario - but they all, in theory, provide that to avoid obvious favorable grading to certain individuals.

Marc- All I can say is that 7 years ago I was going to consign many items to a major auction house. I was told that they wanted to graded several of the cards because it would really bring the price up. The guy who discussed this with me specifically told me, straight out and openly, that they needed to submit them (instead of me)because they would get a better grade if they submitted them.

I had almost the exact same experience as tbob but mine occurred less than 1 year ago. I was told the same thing.

Which is why I tried to say "in theory" two or three times. Especially with more expensive cards, on site submissions, and major players in the hobby -- I think the concept of blind grading is not very believable.

I agree. I have sent a card in and then cracked it. Then I had a reputable dealer send it in and it scored better.

it doesn't mean any of you are wrong, but there are easy and logical ways to explain all of this:

1. I have submitted the same card twice myself...and at times they have received different grades. Does this mean one version of myself was getting favors from the grading company while the other version of myself wasn't? Of course not. The easy explanation is that some grading companies (might as well say PSA in particular) are inconsistent with their grading. Sometimes they grade too high, sometimes they grade too low. So if a card is submitted more than once, if the grading is inconsistent, then you'll see two different grades. This is not good...and is a problem specifically at PSA...but it doesn't mean when you see a dealer submit a card for you that they are getting favors. This doesn't mean that some people don't get favors ... but it's a simple explanation that doesn't need a conspiracy theory to why the same card can get different grades when submitted twice.

2. Do auctioneers get better grades when they submit cards for you? Or do they want to tell you that to make sure the cards are already in their hands? Are they worried that if you submit them yourself that you may change your mind and sell it to someone else instead of auctioning it off with them? They want your cards in their hands and have you sign on the dotted line. That's their business. I have not experienced cards in graded holders from major auctioneers being graded too high relative to the general population of cards.
