I am looking for the Jesse Burkett card from this 1921 black & white set. Apparently Burkett was a coach for either the Yankees or the Giants in the World Series.

Does anybody have any idea where I could get one?? Furthermore, does anybody have ANY cards from this set, or is it some esoteric set that I will never see at card shows, etc.???

Koester Bread cards are extremely rare. I think that the Burkett is on just about every HOF collectors Want List. Good Luck.

Just when I thought I had come up with an "easy" way to find a Burkett card other than the T204....

my bubble is popped once again!!!

I guess I should call BTuttle and see if he can get me a "Just So" Burkett card...

Lew Lipset used to have some of these cards. I would suggest that you try him.

Thanks Jay, I will do that.

In the meantime -- as much as I hated to give money to a fraud -- I had to purchase the T204 Burkett REPRINT so that I can stare at it over and over until I get my hands on a real one!!

Good Lord, only I am dumb enough to KNOW that a card is a reprint and STILL get taken to the cleaners.

Perhaps I am only showing my stupidity in public so that some of you guys will feel sorry for me and sell me your REAL Burkett cards because you know that I will pay too much...

You guys will be glad to know that the person who auctions off those "old" reprints apparently reads this board, because she has e-mailed me a copy of this thread.

I have decided NOT to pay for the auction because the reprint is clearly NOT "old" as she indicated in her description. I offered to refund her $5 to cover the listing fee, so she may or may not report me to EBay and try to give me my FIRST negative feedback in 500+ transactions.

Hopefully she will not do this since she still has her card and has lost nothing.

$5 is better than $100, right?

Besides buying a complete reprint set, he'll buy one Wagner reprint, for later use!

I remember a Just So Tobacco Zimmer, almost two months ago on eBay, and at the same time an "old" reprint of the same card, with 1893 in pencil on the back...

Is there a way to protect pictures from copying?

If the person that has been selling the "OLD REPRINTS", (Audrey999) in fact reads this board as HalleyGator suggests, I have a message for you. I believe that lots of us share the same sentiment. Please list your **** somewhere else on Ebay. I am tired of having to look at reams of copies of images that you stole from other people (including me) for sale for ridiculous amounts of money in the Pre 1950 category. How do you look at yourself in the mirror?

Actually, IBM or one of those companies is developing software that will prevent the printing of computer images of US$ paper currency. Either, there will be no image printed or a distorted image.

Hi Hal -
Based on my experience hunting down Burkett the best bet is the T204 which is at least close to his major league playing career rather than the Koester card which I don't believe I have ever seen for sale. Besides the T204 is much more attractive. I got my T204 from Scott Brockelman -- he might be able to locate another. Its one of the those cards that the price guides/SMR grossly undervalue in light of HOF collectors' demand.
Good luck.
Brian H

Hal:

I, too, had been looking for the Koester Bread Burkett. In my case the search took about 5 years. Since your previous post, I managed to pick one up as part of a lot of 24 that didn't meet the seller's reserve on ebay. The seller would not sell singles, so I bought the entire lot and had a partner sell off all the rest.

My example would not get a high technical grade due to centering, minor corner wear and a wrinkle in the upper left corner, but knowing how hard this baby is to find (it's the only one I've ever seen offered for sale) I'm glad just to have it, period.

Kevin

Is there any way to tell the difference between a Koester's bread card and a W-575-1? It seems like some players and coaches (Burkett for example) are only in the Koester's set, so it's easy for them. But what about for the players who are in both sets?

Nice card!!

I did pick up a T204 Burkett (I believe it was from Scott B.) later in 2001 ... so I don't really "need" the Koester's Bread Burkett ...

but it sure would be nice to have!! Rare indeed.

Paul:

I had the same issues before I bought the lot, so I consulted a bunch of folks (David Bryan, Lew Lipset and Frank Ward among others). Unforutnately, the only sort of consensus I could come up with was without the advertising on the back there is no definitive way to tell the difference between some of the sets of this era. That is also the opinion expressed in the SCD bible.

Frank believed there was a difference in thickness of the card stock, but the others seemed not to agree or were non-committal.
