Default "The Marinolli Treasure" - FUNNY update

Posted By: Hal Lewis

Sometimes in life, the truth is funnier than fiction (not the fiction I write, mind you, but apparently someone else's):

I spoke with the publishing house this morning, and we're not sure, but an error MAY have been made and the first few people who ordered my book may be sent a printed copy of the "final proof" edition and not the actual final and completely edited copy.

Do NOT panic -- the only difference is one minor typo on the back cover and the page numbers had not yet been inserted... so please just dog-ear to save your place if you get this version.

The IRONY!

Now there MAY be an "error card proof" version of my book out there somewhere.

HOPEFULLY NOT!

*** But if any of you get this version and don't want it, please send it to me and I WILL PAY the cost of replacing it for you. ***

I'd be furious with them if it wasn't so damned ironic. Poetic Justice.

The only thing that could go worse for me would be if someone had inserted "F*** FACE" on the bottom of Honus's bat.

If mine's an error version I'll get it holdered. If trimmed, what? Mastro?

If you write your own page numbers in, be sure to do it in light pencil so that they can be erased and the book can still be slabbed in the future.

I thought you were going to say you were pulling the book from print because you don't want children to become addicted to books.

Hal, I'm curious -- how did you carve out the time to write a book? I barely have time to read a book.

I just spent a lot less time here over the past few months.

Some says it's a waste of time; others say it's a colossal waste of time -- but it's still our home on the net!

I thought you were going to say you were pulling the book from print because you object to the promotion of tobacco products.

I just got my copy. My first short-print error-version of anything! lol. Got one of the early ones, and have to say I kind of like that I got the minor typo on the back cover.

Can't wait to read it after finals in August.

Joann

I also received one of the "proof" versions. It's off being graded and slabbed as I type this.

Sorry folks. Hope you remember to use a book mark since the page numbers aren't there!

The corrected version on-line now has the a slightly wider center margin as well.

And yes, the back cover typo was fixed too.

As I said before, I really will replace any of the "error" versions with a new final copy if you want at my cost.

Hope you guys like the book!!

I got mine in yesterday and one of the 1st things I noticed was the lack of page #'s, at first I thought I had a truly unique 1/1 version until now but, thats ok because its still a 1/20 ,or so, version LOL! Anyway's, who needs page #'s when your reading non-stop till the end!!!! Great Book!!

Hey, I was unaware that Hal had written a book -- even though I read these boards daily. Good thing Barry sent me an email to remind me and "raise awareness."

I know by typing this response Im doing the very thing I am complaining about, but must we keep bumping this thread? We all know there is a book, that everyone who's read it thinks its a good one (well, except for one guy who got banned), we've now rec'd emails from Barry promoting the book, etc.

Sorry to be bitching about this, but Ive thought from the beginning that all of these threads should have been put on the B/S/T, not the main forum.

Sorry to bump this, but I think it's "okay" to post in the main forum about a book that one of our own posters has written. If you write a book JK I will buy it too.

We all know that Lichtman is going to write a book someday.

Dan,

In some respects I agree. However, the original post was not a post "about" a book written by one of our contributors, it was a post about purchasing a book written by one of our contributors. If it had originally been posted on bst and then someone other than Hal had started a thread about how good the book was, I would agree fully with your statement. Also, IMO, this particular thread never should have been a separate thread even if there was no problem with the initial post.

Also, please understand, I have nothing against Hal and have always had positive dealings with Hal. I would have the same complaint regardless of who started the thread and what was being offered.

Perhaps we're making too much of this. We are a community of friends and Hal has been an active poster since the beginning of time (slight exaggeration). What's the big deal if he promotes it a bit? I don't think he will get rich on it; I think he is proud of it, and he is a friend and that's why I agreed to send out the email last night.

I like to think of Hal as the PT Barnum of Net54 - He does do a lot of promotion , but I think he's earned it with what he has contributed here.

Yesterday (or was it the day before?) someone came on here that I didn't recognize and was promoting the Home Run Derby DVD. Not only is that off topic, but it was from an unknown poster. I used it as an opportunity to promote the fact I was looking for the 1959 Dick Stuart HRD card.

Barry, that is a slippery slope. Perhaps, then, we should just allow all active contributors to sell on the main board.

Yes and no. If I came on the main page with "T206's for sale", despite my being a regular poster I would say it should be immediately deleted.

But Hal actually wrote this book, no small accomplishment, so I would give him a little more leeway.

And Bobby Binder created his own new web service, no small feat, and was universally criticized for continuing to promote it on the main board. Granted, he may not have been as big a contributor as Hal, but I see little distinction.

Hal does have ad space everytime he's trying to sell one of his cards or a book. It's called creating another thread about it and repeatedly bumping it to the top.

the book arrived today, too bad it's not the nnop variation. it's still probably a better option than $15 spent at the airport bookstore on fhm, maxim, and us weekly on your way to cleveland.

my summer's booked with this and the ed delahanty's emerald age of baseball.
