Default New York Clipper Newspaper

Posted By: GregG

I recently aquired a bunch of individual pages from the New York Clipper newspaper from 1889. It appears as though someone separated the individaul pages that had baseball box-scores, baseball pictures and front-pages with baseball pictures. There are about 30 pages all from 1889 but from different papers during that year. Is the Clipper newspaper very collectible in general? Does the fact they are loose pages cancel any value they might have had?

Thanks,
Greg

Default New York Clipper Newspaper

I love the New York Clipper. For me, their primary value is content--information about the early history of the game. Their financial value mainly comes from the images--mainly woodcuts--of ballplayers and places. In some cases, a portrait in the New York Clipper is the only known picture of a player. There are collectors of woodcuts (poke around this site for more info), but in general, a whole paper is always preferable to cut pages. As a frame of reference, here's a couple of links to Lew Lipset auctions.
