Hypothetical question? or do you really have that much to spend? I'm about to have that problem. Money to spend and not certain what I want to buy.

Personally, I'd pick up the T205 Hoblitzell No stats, a hindu and Drum back from the same set. Working on a Master set, and that money would get me there very quickly. Then I could focus on upgrading my current filler cards.

Maybe some T3's always liked they way they look, but just a little unattainable at this point.

There will always be something to buy if you have the money. I have no problem spending, i have a problem saving. Trying to balance collecting with the financial aspect is tough for me. The hardest part is selling what I spend the money on. Even if I can make a lot of money on a card, i'm reluctant to sell!

real question - figuring out whether to splurge on one card or spread it over a few...a bunch of HOF t206 in presentable grade would get you there pretty quick, or do you get just one premium card in a nice grade (e90-1 jackson, m101-4 ruth, 1914 cj christy)

I was serious about the RARITY of certain old cards like the MINO Wagner and others.

I think THOSE are the ones that will explode in value soon.

Coupons, MINOS, KOTTONS, etc. will I think boom like the Caramel cards have.

The best condition T206 Cobb green $15K could buy, if I kept it to one card. If I spread it around, it would be an E107 Detroiter, N162 Brouthers, and mid grade Cobb caramel cards.

I don't think you could get a 1914 CJ Matty for $15k any longer...

unless it was so beaten that you wouldn't want it.

The Green T206 Cobb is always a safe buy.

All SGC Graded T206's (30's - "Good")

Eddie Plank (Approx $10,000.00)
Ray Demmitt - St. Louis (Approx $1,500.00)
All Four Cobbs (Approx $2,500.00 total)

Southern Leaguers - Bernhard, Foster, Lafitte, Shaugnassy, Stark (Approx $300.00 total)

Christy Mathewson - Portrait (Approx $250.00)
Walter Johnson - Portrait (Approx $200.00)

That's $14, 750.00. The remaining $250.00 would be used to pay my increased insurance premiums.

15K ain't going to come close to cutting it. Id have to make that 25K just about right away, so that Id have a little working capital. My 15K is going into high grade commons, whatever that group most likes. Perhaps some Goudey whats his names.

It would go towards rare cards that I need for my player set. Not sure I'd be able to pry a few of the cards away from people since a few of them have only a few known examples.

If you want to make a good investment AND have some nice card, I would:

- spend $6,000 on a portrait Wagner such as a M116 or Tip Top Bread (there was a very nice Blue M116 a couple of months ago for $5,100 on EBay).

- spend $5,000 on a respectable Cap Anson N172 portrait.

- spend $4,000 on rare back cards (Hal's idea about the Mino Cigs Wags is right on. I had a chance on a Mino Cigs Wags [sgc 30] a few months ago but in the end another board member "won" it).

I don't think I'd go bananas with $15K in extra dollars for cards.

I think I'd probably just sock it away and buy a bunch of $500-1000 prewar HOFers.

My first 10K would cover the BIN on this http://cgi.ebay.com/1911-D359-Rochester-Baking-Philadelphia-CHIEF-BENDER_W0QQitemZ220038720510QQihZ012QQcategoryZ868 41QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Maybe the left over 5K would be enough to win a cheap lot from one of the big auction houses...

Just to keep things accurate, the "beater" E107 Matty sold for $90k, not $75k.

Give me a beater E107 Mathewson over a T206 Wagner any day.

In our view the most efficient use of a "found $15k" would be to save it
for next April's Robert Edward Auction. There will be some very rare,in some
cases unique, and certainly very special items.

The average baseball card/memorabilia lot brings well over $6000 in
the REA auctions, so if we are lucky, the $15k will help us to acquire
one or two bonus lots and/or pay the buyer's premium.

Our alternative selection would be to purchase the E-93 commons
we need in PSA 8 and highest graded E-99 and E 100 Bishop type cards
available

I would go for a batch of graded T206 HOFers in EX 5 or EX-MT 6. These are available every day on eBay from reputable sellers. I try to find ones that are well-centered with no wrinkles or other surface defects. A little corner wear doesn't bother me. When I see a card graded EX that looks like a NM-MT one, I usually suspect that a surface defect is present but perhaps not readily apparent in the scan.

There are dozens of nice T206's being offered in the current Heritage auction, including a good selection of NM 7 and NM-MT 8 ones, but these latter have gotten quite pricey lately. And while the higher grade ones are certainly attractive, the EX and EX-MT ones for me have more 'character' and a more authentic feel relative to their age; I feel like they offer the best quality for the dollar.

There are only seventy-six Hall of Famers (including Wagner and Plank) in the entire T206 set and minus the two mentioned you could probably pick up most of them in the 3 to 4 range

For me, it would be a T216 Wagner throwing with a Virginia Brights reverse. Of course, I am assuming that one exists, as I have never seen nor heard of one.

Agree John... that would be about the only similar card that is more rare than the MINO...

but you are correct in that it may be so rare because it doesn't exist?

After all this input, which way are you leaning?

You could just give me the cash and I could get you something nice...like a couple of Pujols rookies and a Jeter autographed ball!
(insert smiling emoticon here)

Honestly, the choices are endless, but if you are just starting out (your login is cardrookie), it would probably be more gratifying to spread it out and grab as much as you can (HOFers, a set or two, etc), but for investment purposes, the smartest thing to do is target one oft-desired card, in as nice a grade as you can, because they appreciate better and can be more easily unloaded later...

I defer to the experienced board members for the specifics on targets...

the feedback has been fantastic...the diverse views just highlights what a great hobby this is...if anything, i'm more undecided than ever, but have at least got some excellent thoughts to go with

i've always loved the plank, but trying to get one in my price range is almost impossible unless you get one that is nearly unrecognisable...also, given the rarity, i could be waiting forever before one in my price range comes up

i think i'll end up spreading it with one desirable card (obak weaver, 1914 cj cobb) in decent grade, a rare back card in any grade, and a few t206 HOF portraits (cobb green, christy, johnson) in mid-grade

will be sure to post details and pics of my purchases...in the meantime keep the posts coming and thanks to the board
