so much for the days of cheap strip cards. I've just see almost every group of w514s in F-G this past week go for over $10 per card. You can get the same condition t206s for almost half what strip cards are selling for now. Guess I have to go find a new source of cheap cards for my collection

Black Sox and Conlon Photos are two things I started collecting in time..except for Jacksons..actually, I got a Cracker Jack Jackson, 1914, for $150..in the early '90s?middle '90s--no '80s--cause I had to sell it in '89. I loved it at the time...later, I persuaded myself he looked like a wooden doll...who needs a 5-10K wooden doll? Not me...

Yes, I remember when Mark M didn't consider strip cards cards...that changed.

Yes Jay,

Many of the strip cards are quaint crude drawings of players which have been typically more often viewed as ugly than "quaint". At current prices however, these cards compete with sets which have a strong following as you point out, such as t206.

Although I like the strip cards at their former prices, I plan to ride this surge out. There are better values readilly available.

And many are pretty good looking, although not the little works of art that T and E cards can be. I picked up a couple of nice ones at the National for tolerable prices.

Outside of the BlackSox and high graded stars/HOFer's, the prices are still relatively cheap. I picked up a couple last month; a Sisler W514 for $10 (a small portion of the top right corner was gone) and a "Greasey" Neale for $12.

Personally, these issues are not something that I prefer to collect unless the player appeals to me. The images on the W516's are decent, the W514's are tolerable, but the W512's are ghoulish and grotesque.

So if you saw the two "high grade" w514's that just sold am i pissed..i put in a ridiculously high snipe bid on them figuring that if they went b/w 80-120 i just didn't care since i'm a collector, and i wasn't going to be around for the auction close at least i'd get them..... One other person put in a ridiculous snipe on both of them as well though..... oh well! At least they are SLABBED. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Dennis - I had a snipe set on the Cravath as well - but was blown out of the water. I'm not sure who wolverinegod is - but if that is Don Louchios chasing the strip cards - I would imagine prices will stay high until he finishes off his set.

But wait! BlackSoxFan you have only told us a part of the story.

The real story is that you still got away cheap.

How much higher was your bid? If the other bidder offered $350, $450. or more -- would you still have out bid him?

Ive won a bid at $400 on a card which was worth at least half of that (and Ive done worse); so you are not alone ... but you did do it on two cards.


Edited to add: I do not regret my overpayments. The cards were special, and still are to me.

The Heilmann I got was part of a complete sheet that had sufficient damage that I decided not to keep it intact, as it would have made a rotten display piece. For those of you who haven't seen a sheet, it is about the size of notebook paper. The first four rows (20 cards) are playing "cards" with the bottom row having 5 miscellaneous format images. The ballplayer and two of the boxers were in the bottom row, which took a real beating despite having a large white border around the perimeter of the 25 cards. Someone had previously removed a part of the top and right borders and there was a big chunk missing from the bottom row. Luckily for me, the two best cards on the sheet (Heilmann and Benny Leonard) were in great shape. The other two boxers (Schwartz and Stribling) unfortunately were shredded, as was the Lon Chaney on the bottom row. Others of note on the sheet were Oswald the Rabbit (Walt Disney's first "star" character), Gary Cooper (had a print line thru it), Charlie Chaplin (also in nice shape), Monte Blue (silent movie cowboy). The rest of the cards were silent film stars of little note.

Cutting down the sheet was really tough. Unlike other sets, the W565 was comprised of 25 cards that were obviously laid out and photographed (like the N172 small image variations) then printed. You can see the clear tape lines on some of the card images. It meant that there wasn't a single straight cut line on the whole sheet that spanned more than 2 cards and the black borders between the cards were various widths and shapes. I had to go after the valuable cards without regard to the others and hope I could get the others out clean afterwards.
