Default Glass Lantern Slides. Any Info?

I was the winning bidder of this item on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261019989107...84.m1497.l2649
I mainly collect oddball Wagner items so am not worried if I got ripped off or got a "steal". It's a pretty cool 3 1/4" x 4" BB card looking glass piece. Just wondering if anyone has seen these for sale before or has any other info than what the seller provided. Thanks in advance.

I think you paid a fair price. It it's glass it's authentic, as they used glass only on antique slides.

I've seen glass slides of Cobb, Joe Jackson, Walter Johnson and such before, but they are rare.

This was an odd pickup as I mainly collect T206s, but I liked how they looked. Unfortunately there were two others I missed.

Have yet to figure out the best way to scan them, they are almost the size of my hand.

So I'm guessing these were shown in theaters pre news reel? The one I have looks like a colorized photo. I'm wondering if it's safe to scan without hurting it.

Correct, glass lanterns typically used in movie houses between shows, sort of a newsreel or coming attraction from the silent era. Not common given the delicacy of the material. I have a few of Jess Willard, the heavyweight champ, but those baseball ones are spectacular. Not any good ways to shoot them casually. What you really need is a light table like for slides. I tried to shine a light behind this Willard v. Jack Johnson one while I scanned it:

Didn't work too well. This one scanned OK with a piece of white comic book board behind it just because the image has sharp areas of contrast.

I actually have one for sale on the BST right now

They are completely safe to scan. While the quality of the scan is really dictated by your scanner, you can make an nice print from your scan. It's something really cool you can do to display with the slide.
