Default Nicest black and white photo issues?

Posted By: Gary B.

I'm discovering that some of the cards I enjoy most are pre-war black and white photograph cards, as opposed to drawings. I even prefer the black and white issues to the sepia ones. The 3 nicest looking cards I own are a M101-4, a W572 and a 1926 Zee-Nut. The Zee-Nut I actually think is even the most attractive, because it's a full bleed black and white photo with no white border.

What do people think are among the most attractive pre-war issues (without regard to rarity and value of issue) using black and white photography?

I am partial to the W-575-1 set...no gaudy borders, just photos, names, and teams...

(if halftone counts).

Some of the b snd w photos in the middle of T202s (of course they make use of the CONTRAST between the photos and the lithographic end panels) are great early photos; some are duds.

T202 center panels are sweet, the Ramly portraits are real nice, Fatima teams, P2 pin (large letter only) are just a few I can recall!

m101-4/5 and e120/1 are 2 of my favorite B&W set. the w572 is also very nice. Personally, I love the Zeenut sets with the white background.

OH you mean affordable??

Fan craze's have a nice portrait and are undervalued. Lots of hof rookies if that turns your crank (not for me). Agree with Joshua on the w575, and will also throw out colgans chips as a favorite.

Hoe many times do we have to tell you, OJ are sepia tones, not B&W
You're young, so we'll forgive you.

yes Jay, sepia toned but a photographic image. Still probably alot closer to what Gary might like than a lithographic e92 Oakes

I like the '17 Zeenuts too

This is an easy one. The best pre-war b/w photo issue is the 1923-24 Billiken set. What else comes close?

I think the W503s are among the nicest. They don't look like W cards at all. They have a very clear photo, usually one that is found on no other card. They're also very tough to find, unfortunately.

There are also some very nice postcard issues, such as Lincoln Publishing, Novelty Cutlery, and others that I'm forgetting about I'm sure.

Yeah, I wish you had one too. I was looking for photos of hall of fame players in my Zee-Nut thread, but no one came up with any. I was especially hoping to see a photo of a Zee-nut Dimaggio - now THAT would be an incredible card to own...

Now that is one NICE ruth card right there. "King of the bat" - i LOVE that!

What? You want to GIVE it to me? As a GIFT? But you don't even know me. Just because I'm a nice guy? Oh my...I don't...I don't know what to say, that is SO nice of you. God knows I really appreciate it, being somewhat new to the board and back into baseball card collecting after all these years, and I've always wanted a really nice Ruth card. Wow! I mean THANK YOU, man - what a guy! I mean....

Um...oops, sorry, did I, uh, say that out loud?

Fan Craze--ever seen the Plank, the Lajoie, the Hanlon?
Old Judge (sorry, they look liike b and w photos to me! I don't care if they ARE sepia). The Radbourne protrait, Wright portrait, Hoys...
Ramley: Burkett, Brown...
T202: The Speaker series with Wood, the Matty portraits, Evers sliding...
T222: Alexander ain't a bad choice!

So many different shades of black and white!
Thank you, Terry Knouse, for completing my N162 baseball set; Christmnas came and I didn't even go to the National!

I love the photos on the 1939 Play Ball set. No Cubbies, though.

I have to agree with Ryan, nothing can compare with the 1923-24 Billikens.

As for American issues, the T222 Fatimas are great but the player selection is terrible.

It is from the JV-1 uncataloged set - definitely a striking card.
