Default rookie T206 question

Posted By: Rob

i only own one T206 ... its a Manning NY AL in a batting pose with a 150 series sweet caporal back.

I've seen the same card on ebay with a 350 series on the back. Whats the difference between the two? Does every card issued in the 150 series also have a 350 series? Is one worth more (or more rare) than the other?

Just asking some newbie questions, thanks!
Rob

I've always referred to a card appearing in both the 150 and 350 series as a "code 2" card. Cards appearing only in the 150 series as "code 1" cards and cards appearing only in the 350 series as "code 3". I'm not real clear on the dates but think that the 150 series is 1909 and the 350 series 1910.

Code 2 card are the most common IMO.

There are theoretically 144 cards in the T206 set that were issued 1st with the 150 Series in 1909, and
then again with the 2nd Series in 1910 having 350 backs.

I say "theoretically", because this rule varies, depending on the Tobacco brand on the back of the T206's.

In the majority of the cases, the value of a given T206 does not change whether it has a 150 or a 350 back.

Am I correct that there are cards in the 350 series and 460 series that would be "code 4" cards and cards only in the 460 series that would be "code 5" cards?

And 460 series cards are 1911?

And Rob:

If you think you may be interested in more on T206 I recommend Lew Lipset's Encyclopaedia of Tobacco Cards. It comes up on ebay from time to time.

I could be wrong. My thinking was that 150 series were issued in the spring and summer of 1909 and on into the first part of 1910. 350 series were issued the later part of 1910 and then 460 series were issued a very short time in 1911. Ted or Scot would probably know for sure.

Scot Reader's Inside T206 (available at the link below) provides all the insight necessary to become relatively advanced in the ways and means of T206. It improves upon the previous source material, including Lipset's and Heitman's, which are also both excellent.

Your "codifying" of the different T206 Series is interesting....but, the following breakdown is more accurate

1st........11 Subjects (150-only) that include MAGIE & WAGNER

2nd......145 Subjects (150/350) includes PLANK

3rd........48 Subjects (Southern Leaguers)

4th......208 Subjects (350-only) includes JOE DOYLE error

5th.........2 Subjects (DEMMITT & O'HARA) St. Louis variations

5th........62 Subjects (350/460) that include the 6 - Super Prints

6th........48 Subjects (460-only)

Total....524

Putting the Southerns in with a separate code is helpful but old habits die hard. I guess I'll call the Southerns a "code 6" though in reality they are a "code 3".

If I can further muddy the waters, I would bifurcate the southern leaguers and the 350/460 subjects into two distinct series each (due to theoretical differences in back availability indicated in the parentheticals).

SL Group A: 42 South Atlantic, Southern and Virginia League subjects
(YES Hindu)

SL Group B: 6 Texas League subjects
(NO Hindu)

350/460 Group A: 6 Superprints
(YES American Beauty 350 with Frame, NO American Beauty 350 without Frame, YES Carolina Brights, YES Cycle 350, YES Sweet Cap 460/30, YES Sovereign 460, etc.)

350/460 Group B: 55 Regular Prints
(YES American Beauty 350 without Frame, NO American Beauty 350 with Frame, NO Carolina Brights, NO Cycle 350, NO Sweet Cap 460/30, NO Sovereign 460, etc.)

Simple question. Not sure if this is the right place to ask.
T206 Luther "Dummy" Taylor cards. What backs does he come in? I currently have 5 and would like to get them all.
Thank you,
Scott.

If I'm in the wrong place, maybe somebody would be so kind to e-mail me privately with the answer. Scottg@accessmfgsys.com.

Thanks again,
Scott.
