Default How far are you on your quest to slay the monster?

Mintacular's thread got me thinking, how close the monster slayers on the board to completing the adventure. I know this thread has been done before, but I can't remember the last time. I have been working on it since 2003 with my Dad. We started at the Moeller High School Thanksgiving Show in Cincy. I am now 34 and we have about 350 of the 520. Someday it will be complete, but I am in no hurry.

About 10 years in, off and on. Have 511, probably will stop at 518. Collecting on the cheap, no card has cost more than $150, probably averaging about $10 a card. Looking for cheap Cobbs (bat on and off), Coles, Elberfeld (Wash), Ryan, Smith (Chi & Bos), and Young (portrait).

Here's my set

About 4.5 years into it. Very off and on. Have gone large stretches without adding anything. I only collect SGC50 or better and have 231 of 520 (44.4%).

About 4 years in and I'm at 518 of 524. I'm only short the Kleinow(Boston) and Rockenfeld. Have Demmitt and O'Hara St. Louis. Probably will call it done at 520. I do have an E95 Plank and M116 Wagner in my set though. For some reason, I kind of lost interest in the set and moved into type cards for the last year and a half or so. I've only picked up one (Otey) in that time so most of the set was built in 2 1/2 years.

I'm at 518 and one more Cobb and the O'Hara will get me to my finish line (with only 80 Piedmonts). I might (one day) try for the Magie, but if not, so be it.

I recently stopped and sold off my other projects to take another shot at the Monster. Currently, I'm at 37 (#37 arrived today) with 4 incoming. My progress can be seen here:

I am at 488 and have been at it for about 4 years. I will probably stop at 518 unless I can find the O'Hara and Demmitt cheap enough. I haven't really bought too many this year but hope to get back at it next year.

I'm currently 37th on the PSA Registry, at 59.54% complete. I still need 212 cards for completion.

Started with a few different backs and now have a completed Cleveland team set. Overall about 10% done with the monster.

I'm at 138 including 67 hall of famers. All in the fair, good, vg range.

Started last summer. The monster tried to get me to quit this winter and I sold my poor condition commons. I only listened for a few weeks, and now have re-started with a little better focus to aid my budget. I suspect it will try to get me to quit again when I attain all of the hall of famers (-2). Still need 2 cobbs (green and bat-on) 2 Collins, Griffith port, Lajoie throwing and Young glove. We'll see.

In the meantime, I am enjoying the quest. A large part is the plethora of reading material and history on this board and it's links.

Ran across this 10-28-07 "quote" from the archives while reading the thread on number of t206 sets this morning:

It is an amazingly shrewd adversary, yet a most intriguing friend.
Forgive my anthropomorphism.

all the best,
barry

Made me smile. Things like that make this set more than just a stack of cards for me.

Tony

I've just hit 90 cards total, with a fair number of hall of famers, but no Southern League players, since I haven't fully committed to collecting them as well.

I would also say that most of my collection is in Poor or Fair condition, with potentially one card reaching VG at best, though to me the problems history added to the card, make the card more interesting, as you can see a story in each card.

Default Four Cobbs wasn't enough

I flipped T206s a few years back in order to get a low grade of each of the Cobbs "for free." At the beginning of this year I saw the prices drop a bit and got hooked again. I still flip some cards in order to pay for this hobby. Now I'm sitting at 147 low grade cards with all four Cobbs (PSA1), Lundgren Chicago (SGC10) and Cy Young (Bare Hand, SGC10) as my "top dollar" cards. I also have 13 other hall-of-famers and three Southern Leaguers. Thanks to all of the flipping, my net cost per card (including grading) is $8.18.

Erick,
I think it is great that you keep the data on all of your card purchases. For the first 3 years I redcorded, when, where, and how much I paid for each card. I wish I never quit keeping this data.

Was at 519 last year (needed O'Hara). Now I'm at 511. Apparently I'm doing something wrong. The goal is 520, unslabbed, no creases, no paper loss.

Wow cool Erick. I wish I had kept track of that data. I am at 73% with an equal distribution between SL'ers, HOF'ers, stars and commons. Probably never finish the set....

I've been at it for about 4.5 years and luckily I did keep track of what I paid for every card so far. I have 232 total (230 are SGC50 or better and 2 are SGC40). I have 10 HOFs and 7 Southern Leaguers.

So far I have spent an average of $ 60.85 for each card, not bad considering most SGC50 "commons" go for at least $ 50.00.

Default 2 Years today.....

I started the Monster. I have 275 in PSA 6 or 6.5 only. Great fun but seems to be slowing down as I begin to look for cards that don't come up very often in that grade. The complete set will be 518 as I do not think I will ever get the "Big Six" in the grade.

Default The Monster....

I was looking for a collecting direction last December when I stumbled upon Net54 and a thread Scott L. posted about completing his version of the set. I thought that I could do it over a ten year period if I bought just one a week. Well, I just picked up card number 200. I have had an absolute blast working on the set. It is amazing how much there is to learn about it and the players depicted. I have "met" a lot of cool people through this project and look forward to each day I can check another one off the list. Best of luck to all of you who are on the journey, and thanks to Scott L. for the initial inspiration!
