the other had 50+ , why not start a new pick up.

with our first ever black president being sworn in soon, why not show a nice card of the first black ball player that "may" have helped pave the way for our new commander and chief !! leon- if it is not "old" enough please delete, i thought maybe this could be a good exception. i have added a back up of joe d. just in case. lol.

[linked image]

i know these are "frowned" upon somewhat, but if people can collect old judges that are faded to death! why not a nice blackand white of joe d.?

Marty....

awesome Robinson.

I scratch my head sometimes and wonder if the printer who printed the Leaf cards ever cared about quality....
but not with your card.

The card graders may have judged the paper to be a 7
but this printer grades the printing as a 9.

great card.

hi joe d- your right ! i guess ted z can explain better than anybody why leaf cards vary so much paper quailty wise?? some cards have held up better than some, or maybe it's just the way they were preserved, attic vs. basement, etc etc..

Nice centering. Fat borders. Corners look good. The Matty white in this grade is sneaky low pop. Very happy. Great chance for a bump.

Just picked these 2 up at a local antique show (just kidding!), they are a welcome addition to the collection...Thanks Dan!
[linked image] [linked image]

Picked this up from James, I don't know that I have ever seen an Uncle Jack's printed in black & white before (this is NOT the green tint).
[linked image]

Also added another to the E270 Colgan's Tin Tops collection (I hadn't ever seen the Donlin before--he never actually played with Philadelphia)

Rhett, that's an incredible Tin Top of Donlin. Was he on the Phillies for an hour? Over the winter? Amazing.

According to BaseballReference.com, Donlin was picked up by the Phillies on Christmas Eve of 1912. He did not play in the 1913 season, but played a few games in 1914 for the Giants.

Jeff, from what I can recall Donlin was released by Pittsburgh after 1912, and was picked up by Philadelphia, however he refused to go and "retired" from baseball to persue his acting career. He didn't play the entire 1913 season, but returned in 1914 with the Giants, without much success. He then retired for good and went into acting full time. This E270 was one of the ones I really wanted to get (I REALLY would like to get my hands on a Walter Johnson) as it wasn't included in the recent Skydash find.

-Rhett

Edited to add: Paul beat me to it.

Rhett, and it was because of his previous attempt to earn a living through acting instead of baseball that he missed out on being in the E254 set. Probably an easy Hall of Famer had he stuck with baseball.

Not a great looking 1.5, but the price was decent and I'm half way to the E93 set now.

Rhett,
That Donlin tin-top has been on my questioned list for years...it is a mixed blessing though...I want one now but it just another card that is going to be super pricey. Oh well...Congrats!

Congratulations on the near completion. It has to be exciting to be so close. I have a long way to go (120 down, 400 to go) but I have tried get some of the pricey cards out of the way early.

I've decided that sharing another new card would be a more productive use of my time than jumping into the political fray, so here -- just a common, but for my money one of the best-looking cards in THE best-looking set in the whole darned ACC.

Brian,
Congrats on the base set. I'm at 85% right now, it's really getting fun. (Although not looking forward to that Wilhelm.) Nice pick up, awesome set. Received these from board members this week.

I thought I was familiar with most Canadian tobacco products, but I picked up the following two cards from a multi-sport set that I had never owned before, the backs are what make them some-what applicable to this board. Regardless, they are from a set I had rarely seen before, probably due to the promotion listed on back--they are catalogued, C140 I think, but they are pretty elusive.

Great stuff all around! Love the pre-war tie-in with the old-school quarter, Jerry, and the range of pickups, and amen David to the "more cards, less politics"!

Just got this in after it cooled its heels at the post office for a while.
