Default Reasons for going to the national...

Posted By: nbrazil

i am thinking of going to my first national this year. But, I am debating whether it is worth the time and money. I have been to several Tristar shows and all of them have been duds. I know the virtues of staying home and buying cards via ebay, the bst, auction houses, etc. I live in the west coast, so it would be a trek to go to cleveland (i.e. it's not like i can drive there). As of today, i am NOT planning to attend the Net 54 dinner. I don't collect autographs, so i am not going to go the national for that reason. I'm also relatively new to the hobby (3 years in after a 10 year layoff), so it's not like i've built a strong network that i would like to meet face to face. So, given the above, are there any viable reasons for attending the national? thanks in advance.

Reasons to attend the National>

1) It is still the show that attracts the best merchandise. While dealers may not always save up material for the show they way they used to, many dealers still bring many great items for sale. Many dealers use this as their ONLY show for the year.

2) The social aspect of the show. It was mentioned in the beginner's guide thread that many members of the board used Scott Brockleman's table (Leon is there as well) as a social hangout, and place to rest. In addition, it's a great place to meet other members of this board and other hobbyists. The late nights in the bar hanging out are fun as well. Some people drink alcohol, people like me drink diet cokes but the fun is the schmoozing.

3) There is still something to be said for face to face communications. I miss the days of going to shows to learn the latest trends, and this show keeps everyone in the loop. No show in the country has as many dealers as the National.

There are more; but those are some good starts

Rich
