Default PSA 10 T206 on ebay

Posted By: Rick McQuillan

Hi,
For the past few days I have been watching an ebay auction for a PSA 10 T206
Jim Pastorius. The auction closed at $10,100 without the reserve being met. I wonder what london_venture had for a reserve? I don't know what the market price is for a PSA 10, but, Holy Cow!, $10,100 is a lot of bucks for a common T206.

I'm interested in seeing what other think about this auction.
Rick

Rare=$$$

I personally thought the centering was a little suspect for a 10, but a very nice card. A $1000 card and $9100 flip...???

Alot of money yes, but still with a PSA 10 label and thats good enough for some folks. I think in REA or Mastro this card fetches 15k easily.

Agreed with both Paul and Lance - not a 10 with that centering.

Wonder about the age of that grade - that looks like an old flip and a low cert #, though I'm poorly versed in those details.

That left edge looks extremely suspect to me. It might just be the scan though. Bat ears?

I think centering on a PSA 10 can be 55/45 which this card probably falls just inside of..

the back can be obviously worse..  I wsa thinking the same thing about the age of the flip.. but am not that familiar either.

Does anyone recall what the last common T206 PSA 10 sold for?

Well I believe it was this exact same card that went for over $20k last year (2007) in one of the auction houses. If that is correct...no reason in REA or Mastro it wouldn't pull $15k now and the buyer of the card on ebay make a couple grand off it.

With a badly centered back like that, makes you wonder when they will start giving out 11's.

I saw the card in person and thought it was overgraded. Perfect corners, great color, but should be a 9.

I think the real point is that a 10 should be darn near perfect. A better example would be easy to differentiate.

And I'm pretty sure I've seen darker blues and greens.

I heard the submitter back in the day received a few 10's a few nines and a couple lowly eights.

This card IMO is no better then a 7 with that reverse.

The front IMO is not even up to 10 standards.

Yes the corners are sharp.

There also appears to be a small dot above "the" on the back and a slight smear under the "I" in Piedmont.

that the card may be one purchased for 20,000. (with or without the buyer's PENALTY?) and a current sales expectation/estimate @ 15,000. in a MAJOR auction. When faced with that one can - cut loses and sell - buy another @ anything less than 20,000. and average the price of the two - keep card until market hopefully catches up. I tend to do the first when I can stop myself from doing the second. Sometimes I just get caught in the third situation because I rationalize with myself - so I guess those would be my hedge funds

How can that card be a 10 with the centering front and back?

Just goes to show how the rarity of a fine specimen can override the standards in grading. Sad.

I still find it hard to believe that people can be separated from their $$$ because of "the" number. I guess there are lots of people willing to fork out a lot of money because of someone's opinion. The following was copied directly from the PSA web site:

A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse.

That card sure looks like it's about 56/44 to me. But that's just my opinion.

Steve/Win Pitcher,

Do you believe PSA's guidelines for a 10 is wrong? If so, do you believe that there should be a greater separation between a 9 and a 10 than between all other grades?

For what my measuring ability in Photoshop is worth, I get a side measurement ratio of 35:53, or 39.7 to 60.3 on a scale of 100.

and 75/25 percent on the reverse.

The card in question IMO does not meet that criteria.

The reverse looks, to me anyway, like it is 90/10 at best.

Maybe Charlie can tell us why it sold for 'so little.' And why London Ventures continues to run hundreds of private auctions when it previously gave as a reason for this that it was due to a mistake.

Do you believe PSA's guidelines for a 10 is wrong?

Not wrong, as they can have any standard they choose.

My standards is what matters to me.

PSA seems pretty variable on their OC designation...sometimes you see it...sometimes you don't?! This card is an 8-9...at best...to me...and may even warrant a qualifier.

Steve, I fully agree with you. There seems to be a fine line between criticizing a grading company's standard and our own standards. I do, however, that this card should not be a 10 simply based on their own requirements.

$10K wasn't paid for a common T206 that most collectors would value at a few hundred. The label was purchased for $10K. Dan.

Dan not sure if you realized it but the card did not sell.

The reserve was not met, unless of course you are saying it has sold
in the past for 10k?

Jeff,

See. He's listening to you! He has relisted it, removed the reserve, and it is no longer a "private listing."

http://cgi.ebay.com/T206-Jim-Pastorius-PSA-10-GEM-MT-RARE_W0QQitemZ260279814514

(Of course, after it did not meet reserve with a high bid of $10,100, the opening bid is now $18,000.)

Wow, I don't know how London Ventures figured out how to make its auctions non-private! Must have taken a real leap in faith for them to unblock their auctions and remove the reserve. Somehow I think they'll figure out a way to continue to get good prices on their cards, though.
