1st May Pickups Thread
With the "wealth" of auctions that just ended (or are ending soon) I thought I would start a May Pickups thread. Should generate lots of great posts...
I'll start with an item I didn't expect to get. Placed a very early bid on Day 1, and thankfully it held up. Two extremely rare and top-tier Pennants hit the auction blocks this week. The best is in REA (1922 Giants) and this one was a close 2nd, in Mears. With the REA Pennant now at $2,500 (and climbing) I'm out of the picture. So I am thrilled to have nailed this one down. Seems like premium pennants are drying up. REA has just the one, and Legendary and Heritage had none this time around... I cannot ever recall so few pennants being offered via these catalogues. Also, a warning for Mike H... Don't look! |

Thanks to Jodi for this amazing Tommy Bridges letter. It's dated Nov. 29 1929 so it was written just before his first season with the Tigers. It was sent to and came from the collection of Billy Doyle, a Tigers' scout, and it is worth mentioning that Bridges inquired to know if the new management remember the $500 bonus the old management promised if he advanced to the club that season. Today's players are so pampered. Thanks again Jodi!

Picked this up earlier in the week. It a 1989 Warren Newson Wichita Wranglers jersey. If I could only find an 89 Wranglers #9 jersey to go with it.

Clint,
Warren and I were roommates on the road for part of the season. Great guy. Very quiet but with a sly sense of humor. Great power the other way. He rarely pulled the ball in the air but hit the crap out of it to left and left-center. I was really happy for him when he made the big leagues. I think I remember reading, when he was with the Rangers, that he had a young daughter at the time who was breaking into TV and some work in movies. (Btw, my wife wore No. 9 to her Halloween party at work last year. Everyone thought it was cool that she had gone out and had a jersey made with her name on the back, but they wanted to know why she had "Wichita" sewn on the front.) |

Rob, I was pretty excited to get this jersey and had been wanting one since I saw the two you have. Hopefully I can snag a road jersey now.
I bet your wife did have everyone confused with the Wichita on the front. Clint

Beautiful Bats, Chris....
Here are a couple more recent acquisitions that I felt were worthy of a post... First is a 1910s/20s Baseball Figural Lamp, and second is a cool Hand Fan from the teens, with ancient team mascots and caricatures of the Managers of the day (Mack, McGraw, LaJoie, etc.) This one is authentic, bucking the recent trend of Ebay fakes... |

Great stuff Mark! The fan is great but I love the lamp. Does it work?
Now you have to get the clock to go along with it (unless you already have it). |

The lamp works! As for the clock, it may be a long time before one rolls around. The last one I saw was in Hunt's and went for crazy money. I think this figural came in the form of Bookends as well. I'm pretty sure I have seen them but memory may be playing tricks on me...

You're right about the bookends Mark. Carlton pictured both the clock (2 examples actually) and the bookend in his 2007 National story.

From Tony Andrea via the BST (Memorabilia version). Assist goes to Dan Bretta for tipping me to the post.
I think this may be a really early image of Maude. Look at the difference between this one and the one at the bottom. The one at the bottom is a much more classic look for Maude - probably from her Western Bloomer Girls days in the early 19-teens - with the big hair, older, etc. I've never seen an image of her where she looks as young as she does here. I'm not sure I'd go into the 19th Century (although she may very well have been playing with some of the Star Bloomer teams that were active by then), but I would bet a lot that it predates 1910, and probably by several years, at least. Anyone know when the collar-up look became popular? I might be all wrong on my dates here. Early Maude from Tony, rec'd this week: [IMG][/IMG] Later Maude - much more common look and period for her: [IMG][/IMG] |

Maud certainly looks much younger in the first pose. I don't think it's a stretch to say late 19th Century for the first photo. Other potential tip-offs (besides the obvious difference in her appearance and high collar) might be the lack of a glove in the first pose, as well as her tightly corseted waist. I am not sure exactly when corsets had their heyday, but I can't imagine them being condusive to playing baseball... ouch!
Amazing pickup, btw! Last edited by perezfan; 05-12-2009 at 02:56 AM. |

Joann, I agree with Mark that I think the first photo is circa 1900...and probably late 1890s. Great pickup!

This Spalding dozen baseball box arrived today. Aside from a little tape in the corner its in very good shape. Not normally the type thing I go for, but only paid $40 which seemed like a real bargain.

Thanks guys. Very cool if it were actually 19th Century. Somehow I was thinking that wearing the collar up was more related to the late 00's and early 'teens.
Female player cards and photos from 19C are a lot less common than the ~1910 era. But then, it's very unusual to be able to date them exactly too, so you never know. J |

Par Golf Tin Pick Up
I've picked up quite a few new things lately, hope to post more when get time, but here's one I got a week ago. I went to the 49er Old West Antiques Show in Grass Valley Calif. Why go to an old west show? I learned a long time ago they are usually high quality and anything can show up....I once got an executioner football helmet by going to one!!!!...but that's another story...anyway...I spotted this Par After Shave Powder tin and it caught me off guard...I had to stop and think what it was and remembered it was the same image I have on a sign....so I sort of HAD to buy it...but darn they had it jacked up to $575.00. I looked it over and tried to develop some strategy to counter offer...or even if I really wanted it....I didn't start the wrestling match right then...I figured it wasn't going to run out of there for that much...so cruised the rest of the show....didn't find anything that cleaned me out....so started thinking thru what I would do....talked it over with antique advertising dealer friend Kim Kokles who was set up....he said try to get them down, and offer $450.00....I hit um at $400.00...the gal played the let me ask my husband card....she came back with a $450.00 whine they hated to let it go that cheap.....I said I'd split it for $425...she said they couldn't..but I knew they could....I politely asked her to recheck and I'd be back....of course they took it...who knows if I got a deal or not...a bargain's a state of mind....I'm not use to buying mint condition tins because they are always so expensive....I remember seeing a mint talcum tin sell at a show for $800.00 once, right in front of me, about 12 years ago, that had a gal golfer...so maybe I got a deal. When I got home I realized the sign is for the "lotion" and the tin is for the "Powder"...but what the hey it's the same company and image...I thought about selling it on eBay because of that but a week later and no way would I sell it.

What City?
Ricky, That's one of the nicest photo collages I've seen, for a city league anyway...but I can't make out the shield...what city is it for? Those graphics of the crossed bats and the two flanking balls are killer. The bats look remarkably older than 1909...and it's nice and big, 16x20. What's the story on how you came into it? -Carlton

The photo was an Ebay win from Canada. The shield reads Ottawa city championship. Canadian club I will assume. Really liked the look, (The crossed bats, figure 8 looking balls, collared unis with collars up) but glass broke in shipping. No harm to the picture, but wasn't thrilled about the glass. Seller gave a partial refund which made me feel a little better. Nice photo.

Ricky, very nice poster. The most notable figure there is really Foran, who was quite the mover-and-shaker throughout a long career in, actually, hockey -- longtime Stanley Cup trustee, president of the FAHL, &c'. Normally we disdain the ridiculous MMPORG known as Wikipedia, but occasionally some information there is accurate, including, conveniently, this bio of Foran:

RickBullDog, So it's Candian, I wasn't expecting that. That reminds me of another great Candian football photo a buddy of mine had...it was even more spectaular I thought, he sold it at the 06' National in Anaheim for around $500.00, see below. Butch, Good to know all that on Foran.

Carlton
It is a small world. I have that exact photo in my office that I purchased recently. I'll have to compare the frame tomorrow. It is the most incredible football photo I have seen. I don't think my vendor bought it at the National--he is a small store antiques dealer, so there are at least 2 copies. And since I'm not really a football collector, mine is available for trade or sale (sadly, I was the underbidder on the Ottawa City league photo) Max And Ricky, I'll get you the dimensions of the photo--it is quite large Last edited by baseballart; 05-20-2009 at 10:46 PM. I've checked the frame on my photo, and it is the original frame, with a wood inset mat. Definitely different than the one first pictured here.
The frame is about 23" x 28", with the photo 13" x 21". I'll try and get a good photo, when I remember to lug my good camera to work and figure out how to take photos of photos under glass. Edited to add photo. The photo was taken with my blackberry camera, so it makes the photo look black and white, when it is more sepia. It is truly an incredible photo, Max Last edited by baseballart; 05-21-2009 at 08:36 AM. Reason: added photo |

Wow Max that's wild. Ricky, Darn if I didn't record the dimensions since it was in our own booth...However, YOu can get a feel for the size in a couple of photos I took of our booth there at the 06' National, see this link below and photo. I'd guess it was about 30" wide. Go to the bottom of the page in the link and you'll see mine and John Buonaguidi's booth..you can see the framed photo in a couple of the shots I took

Thanks for the comments, Rawn and David! I am a huge Red Sox fan, especially of the pre-war dynasty they had in the 1910's.
I had picked up a big collection of Boston Globe newspapers spanning from 1910 - 1920 about 20 years ago, and it covers all major events of the time: presidential news, Titanic sinking, and sports. I had one page from the Red Sox World Series appearances from 1912, 1915 and 1916 framed in this same manner. Unfortunately, I do not have any 1918 papers (or 1903 for that matter). I'd love to find 1903 and 1918 examples and have them framed similarly, to give me a complete set of the vintage Series wins! Here is the 1916 paper which I had done in the same manner.... And also since I'm showing off (even though it's non-sports), here is the Boston Globe front page from the day the Titanic sank: |

I'm surprised that you have not found an example from 1918. I see them from time to time, but my collecting timeframe stops at 1916. I hope you put up a picture all of them together when you get them up on the wall and is the room available for visits?
Thank you for sharing, Scott. Rawn

Great pieces of memorabilia guys.
Although it's not a recent purchase, I thought that you guys might enjoy this photo. 1875 Boston Red Stockings & St. Louis Brown Stockings. I bought this on Ebay about 3 or 4 years ago & had a badly needed restoration done. I'm almost certain that the handwriting on the mount is Harry Wright's & the backing board is signed by George Wright. Needless to say, it's one of my favorites in my collection. I'm trying to find out more about the actual day the game was played & any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

I share your interest in old newspapers. The only drawback I've found is the cost on framing them. Some of the artwork is absolutely incredible and they display very nicely.
