Ray Chapman card Survey

Greetings fellow pre-war collectors. I am taking a card survey of 1917 Boston Store or Collins-McCarthy Ray Chapman cards. If anyone has one please post.

Chapman is one of the toughest cards in the Boston Store set and I assume is equally tough with the blank and CM backs. I know of an authentic BS and I have this blank back that I would love to trade for a Boston Store to match my set.



I am unsure if the rarity of the card is due to his death, being a Yankyee or some other factor, but I am curious to see what response we see on the boards.

The back is Boston Store. I also have a Holsum Bread of Chapman.

Here is a blank back M101-5, unfortunately I don't have any E135/Boston Store cards, although if Brian was to ever want to part with his Holsum Bread I would like to first in line!

I have to apologize. I originally thought the post was just looking for Boston Stores of Chapman. I do not have a Collins-McCarthy of Chapman, but I will post the Holsum Bread and the Famous and Barr cards now that we've expanded the topics. I am also posting a rough scan of the backs of the cards (The Famous and Barr back is not exact as far as color tone). The cards, sorry to say, are not for sale.

I thought the Holsum Bread cards were circa 1921? Since Chappie died in 1920 why would his card have been issued in a 1921 set? Unless the Holsum Bread cards are earlier then 1921. Any comments would be welcome.

That particular version of Holsum Bread cards are from 1920, not 1921. They again made a set in 1921 with an ever-so-slightly-different back which Chapman was NOT included in.

Interesting. I never knew that Holsum issued a 1920 set. I did not see that set in Standard Catalogue. I will check that again.

I don't think they have updated the info on that set in a while so I'm pretty sure it won't be listed in the SCD.

Rhett, seems like you are the resident expert on these Holsum cards. I must admit I only have 1 card Red Faber in my collection. Guess more info will become available as more cards are found in the future.

I, personally have catalogued about 25 of the 1920 Type 1's and about 35 of the 1921 Type 2's--there are likely at least 80 in each set, and I have seen quite a few Holsum' that were not accompanied by a back scan so I couldn't include them in my research.

Type 1's have been dated to 1920 (at the earliest) by the following 2 players that began their careers for that team in 1920 (the Strunk w/ arms at side is a Type 1, the batting is a Type 2)...


The Type 2's have been dated at 1921 because I have seen cards of both Eppa Rixey (Cincinnati) and Walter Schang (New York Yankees), both of whom began their careers with those teams in 1921.


Type 1's are those that have the "H." from "H. Weil Baking" all the way to the left border on back, the Type 2's have the "H." indented slightly. Small difference on back but a big difference in the subjects of each set.

Rhett - Thanks for explaining and showing the two types of Holsum Bread cards. I learn something new nearly every day from all you guys at Net54! This prompted me to pull out my WAJO and determine that it is a Type 1. Hope this helps your research effort.
