I'm posting this primarily for Mike, the 71buc....I know Mike has ribboned examples of pins from the Pirates' 1971 playoff run...here's a very faded Giants variety a buddy brought by today. It's 2.125" diameter and the one and only I've ever seen.

Rob, that's the first time I have seen one of those as well. It is certainly similar to the Pirate version. Giants items from that playoff series certainly are hard to come by. Thanks for sharing it. Are you going to attempt to add it to your collection?

I would like to add it but my buddy is also a Giants only collector and I don't think he wants to sell. I'll never say never, though, as we do make the very occasional trade. He remembers paying 12 bucks for it.

The cheaper ones are not far off. I believe Paul grossly exaggerated the prices of some of his rarer pins in order to make himself feel better about what he paid. I liked Paul a lot but some prices were way too high. Also, once the one crazy bidder gets what they're after, the price often drops next time around (at least with pins). I am usually the buyer in the first scenario and seller in the second.

Would you consider pins in the 100-750 range accurate? When you say higher are you referring to the ones in the thousands?

The pinback book is a great resource for letting you know what's out there and the photos are nice. I don't consider it an accurate price guide at all, but I suppose the prices listed may be somewhat helpful as indicators of relative availability and scarcity.

Without really analyzing every pin and every price, I think Paul's prices got a little whacky on usually anything over about $50.... and it seemed the "multiplier" got bigger as the prices went up. e.g. he might say a $50 pin was worth $100 and a $200 pin was worth $800. Bottom line remains any pin is "worth" whatever someone is willing to pay.

That said, Paul's pinback book is a beautiful, must have book for pin collectors. In the oddball world in which I collect, no other reference book comes close. Also, please keep in my that my collecting focus makes me only an "expert" on Giants pins....and many would dispute even that!

I thought I had all versions of this pin until I picked this one up on eBay earlier today. This is the first time if have come across this version. It is 3.5" in size. Normally the Pittsburgh text and Pirates text are the same sized font and the Buc image is located in the center of the pin. On the other versions there are charms and a larger space between the 1971 and the text. As can be seen this is not the case with this pin. I have also never encountered one of these pins with the congratulations text on the banner. If anyone has an idea of what in the hell a Zum Zum is I would love to hear about it.

Is that flattery or confirmation of my obvious lunacy? I set my snipe for this pin at $200 and won it for a whopping $20.50. If that isn't an indictment of my lack of common sense and addiction I don't know what is.

Ha, been there. I've set many nuclear snipes praying that I was the only idiot out there. Thankfully it hasn't bitten me in the ass too often.

I ran across this:

"What was the name of the original food vendor company at Three Rivers Stadium when it opened in 1970 - it was a strange name and they had green uniforms? Answer: Zum Zum"

I just found my holy grail.

I don't have it in hand but it appears the paper and/or celluoid are a bit "wrinkled.' Has anyone ever heared a pin with a hairdryer to "relax" it?

You were very lucky that I decided to leave that one alone... And dont use the hair dryer on it it will ruin it. That coating on those is very thin!

You won't be that thrilled. It has a condition issue....but it completes (I hope!) a set and I've been looking for it for 20+ years!

The wrinkles are not as bad as they looked in the ebay listing.

Rob -- Glad you were able to find it an add it to your collection. It's always fun looking at the photos you post of your pinbacks.

Thanks, Clint. These pins are possibly as early as 1967 and probably were made as late as 1972. I'm not sure anyone knows the exact dates of production. Paul Muchinsky and I kicked around some theories but never came up with anything definite. They are marked as made in Winona, MN (Wincraft) but are not dated.

Thought they might have a specific year. That MLB logo wasn't designed until 1968. I know they used it on uniforms in 1969. Were there other teams in this series? The Players association logo was designed in 1968 as well.

Not all have the MLB and MLBPA logos. Besides the ones pictured here and the Henderson, I also have a McCovey w/o logos. To the best of my knowledge, I now have ALL the Giants pins in this series (I hope!). I don't know of other teams with pins of this same design. Other teams (Twins and d**gers come to mind) had large team buttons like the Killebrews shown.

I know this is our baseball forum but have asked the question on the football forum with no response. Does anyone know is there is a similar PM10 football list? I have an older Tennessee pin with ribbon with a ribbon and football attached and wonder if this was just something someone put out or if there is a listing for it? Thanks and, again, pardon the intrusion.

I run across a Mel Hein NY Giants FOOTBALL PM -10 all the time when I am doing my Giants baseball searches. I'm pretty sure there must be others.

Also, Jim, I suggest you contact board member "weedene." At most times, he has a couple thousand pins on ebay, under his seller name of "seaweed."

Rob,

Thanks. Over the years I have bought a lot from him so will do that. I hadn't thought of that.

Out of curiousity, I searched eBay for "football PM-10." Results included a couple Buddy Youngs, a few Mel Heins and one YA Tittle. A similar search of baseball would bring up 100's, if not 1000's, of b&w player oins.

I had done the same thing before I posted the question but I could not find a listing for football. I have asked seeweed, thanks.

There were three NYG pins done like the Mays on the left. According to Paul Muchinsky's research , these are from 1951 (Giants win the pennant! Giants win the pennant!). What I find interesting is my Hank Thompson has three individual ribbons (of indeterminate color), my Monte Irvin has the standard red, white and blue ribbon with a bat and ball dangle and now this Mays with orange ribbon and bat.

I know Scott Garner is trying to assemble a pinback collection featuring all the guys to ever throw a no-hitter. Scott, there has never been, nor do I think there will ever be, an "official" pin of Matt Cain. You may have to settle for this gem on ebay. The seller seems to move the price up and down, weekly.

Rob,
I've always loved the Mays pinback on the right since I first saw it.
A great one of the Say Hey Kid...

The SF version is even sweeter....even though it was "photoshopped" in.

Can anyone tell me WHY the two Brooks Robinson 50's pinbacks are so rare/scarce? Also, if there's more than two please let me know As a player collect I'd like to pick up one of the two one day!

I just "upgraded" a Mays PM-10 (on left). As you can see, the upgrade is far from great. In Paul Muchinsky's book, his own example is in poor condition (probably poorer than either of mine). This is odd, because most of Paul's pins are in great shape. Does anyone (maybe Al) know if this particular pin seems to be ALWAYS found with these foxing issues?

I would love to start collecting Yankees pins from the 70's and 80's. Is there anything I need to know before starting? Is there anyway to be able to tell the fakes from real pins?

Thanks!

Mike
