Default May pickups

I just received this scorebook from the Walter Johnson Memorial unveiling in 1947. The scorebook has some terrific content on WaJo's career in baseball.

This is a nice compliment to a ticket from the same game that I bought a few years ago...

Default Baseball Trophy Cup

Picked up this beauty on eBay, it is kind of hard to see but pitcher is etched into the side. I believe this is from 1902 and made by Meridan. The inscription reads "Presented to Edwin Werk by the Anti-Knocking Club"

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Bob:
The only "help" I can offer would be to take it off your hands.... though I doubt that would really be appreciated

Congrats on the gorgeous acquisition!

Had to pick up this WWII photo. It's Luke Sewell batting during a USO trip in Burma in 1945. It matches perfectly with the ball I have from this trip that was signed by Luke!

My second signed postcard to go with the Ruth I already have. Thought this was cool even though the conditions is rougher than I normally like. I'll have it certified once I get it but it has 100% money back guarantee with it. Just in case.

FWIW, as far as the RPPC itself, all looks correct for it being an original produced by George Burke. Quite a bit tougher to find them in the 3-1/2"x5-1/2" size with pre-printed postcard back than his usual 4"x6" size. (The opposite is true for his successor, George Brace, who produced RPPC's in abundance).

Thanks for the info.

I have no idea what size this is actually. I saw another one on eBay that the crop looks a bit different but that really means nothing on overall size. I just knew it was a Burke on an AZO 1926-40's RPPC. Just thought it was cool and figured it was from his playing days. As for the signature I have no idea if its real as it looks totally different than most of the signatures I've seen from him.

Nate, how many bats do you have? Are you a hoarder?

Bats are addicting (or addictive?). I purchased my first vintage one and before I knew it, there were ten leaning against the wall in the corner. Then there were fifteen. Then I sold all but one to protect myself.

(In that last sentence there should be a comma after "one", but I liked the accidental double entendra.)

I have close to 800 bats, and you better believe it's an addiction! At least they're mostly vintage.

Beautiful Ted Brad! I saw this one at the Shriner's show a few months back and almost grabbed it... Great image with a super nice signature... Congratulations on a wonderful addition to your collection!

Default Vander Meer Holy Grail pickup now off the list

I finally was able to cross one of my holy grail items off the list last week.
Here is a scored game used scorebook from Johnny Vander Meer's 2nd consecutive no-hitter on June 15, 1938 at Ebbets Field.

Vandy's back-to-back no hitters are considered to be one of the most unassailable records in baseball.

Great pickup Scott. Nice to cross something like that off your list.

I added another Kansas World Tour item to my collection. The neat thing is this ball park is still there and being used.

Thanks Clint and Mark.
I do not have a scored program from Vandy's 1st no-hitter, Mark.
I'm still looking. I know of at least one or two in the hobby. I saw one of them up close on display at the Reds Museum in Cincinnati earlier this year....

Default No-Hiitter pitchers thru July 22, 1920

Here's something you should enjoy, Scott.
I picked up a few Mid-Week pictorials with nice baseball content a couple of weekends ago in an antique shop. This was among them. It is dated July 22, 1920.

Default Mickey Mantle pick-ups

Picked up these Mickey Mantle photos this week and the article two weeks ago.

This next thing is ugly...I don't know what the guy was thinking when he framed it, but I'm glad he saved it.

Dated April 16, 1951 from the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger. It reads in part: Mickey Mantle, sensational New York Yankee rookie,
celebrated his promotion to the varsity yesterday by banging out a home run and three singles.

It was an exhibition game against the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, but it was his first game as a major leaguer, in a major league stadium.

I don't even consider myself a bat collector and I have accumulated about 50 of them. Most are game used from the local minor league team 1947-present.

Picked up a hoard of stuff from one single garage sale yesterday...about 800-1000 1952-59 baseball cards...overall in excellent to mint condition. Super Bowl 1 and 3 programs, 1948 Army v Navy Program, 1933 Nebraska v Oklahoma football program, other misc programs...a shoebox full of 1960-70 Topps football, basketball and baseball cards....and about 100 snapshot photos from the 1980s of Kansas City Royals games. My brother found the sale and texted me to hit an ATM and get my butt over to the sale he was at ASAP.

Default Flock on top

When's the last time any of you saw the Dodgers referred to as "the flock" (as in Robins)?
Terrific historical content in that paper but agreed that the frame job is sorely lacking.

Super haul Dan. I love finds like that...well, reading about them. I am only just a little bit more happy for you than I am jealous of you. Your brother is the man.

Default Cincinnati Redlegs Uniform

Just picked this up last night; 1959 Willard Schmidt road jersey with 1958 Smoky Burgess pants. This is the last style of Redlegs vest I needed (1956-1966).

Still looking for a 1955 home or road Cincinnati jersey with either style patch (square or contour) and have hundreds of flannels and jackets (all teams) available to trade for one.
