Default Holiday Greetings and How Did You Spend This Day

Posted By: Joann

What a great morning so far. I've been cooking all morning, picking up right where I left off last night. Big party later - I love the holidays.

Happy Holidays to everyone on this board. Thank you so much for the great little corner of the world you all provide year 'round. I really enjoy it.

Here's wishing all the best of Holiday cheer, smiles, joyous gatherings, snowy days, hot soup, a fire and maybe some Bailey's.

Joann

Joann, thank you for starting this thread. A little Bailey's in my coffee would hit the spot if I weren't driving in an hour.

Joann:

We're in southern California visiting our son so snow is highly unlikely and fire is a bad word down here!

But I agree with all the rest! Merry Christmas!

It's bright and sunny in New York right now, not a drop of snow anywhere. So we didn't get a white Christmas.

But I do wish everybody a happy and healthy holiday, and let's hope that 2008 proves to be a good year for our hobby. I know there are so many things more important than collecting baseball cards, so maybe wishing for a world filled with peace and happiness would be more appropriate.

All my Jewish friends celebrate on Christmas. People tend to say Happy Holidays out of wariness, but in the field I know of no one who is offended by a polite 'Merry Christmas.'

So Merry Holidays, Happy Christmas, Go Local Team or Athletic Grouping and/or Nice Sweater.

If none of the above applies to you, put on a sweater and read it again.

and same to everyone. cycleback...very funny, liked it.

I would like to reiterate previous thoughts of others that this is a fantastic community. I actually received a collectable in the mail on Xmas eve day from a quiet board member. It is a period photo of one of my cousins, who played ball.

I won't reveal the name here, since I sense he may like his privacy, and I haven't thanked him personally yet. What an amazing gesture in this world that we live in! A xmas present from someone that I have never met.

This type of gesture reinforces/reaffirms the values that you always hope to see and encourage in others, as well as the hobby in general.

Nice add Dave. Let's hijack the thread (can I hijack my own thread? I think I can, right?).

So what did everyone do today?

As stated above, I cooked my rear end off. I had a big family party and we were all supposed to bring one appetizer to the afternoon party. I brought five. It felt so good to be out of school and have time and be able to contribute in ways that I often can't. Plus I love cooking.

Loved seeing all the gifts the kids these days get. Man oh man. So many electronics of every kind. Wii's? iPod's? Nintendo DS's? Wow. That's some cool stuff. What a great age/time to live in, isn't it?

Joann

I fell asleep last night to A Christmas Story and my kid woke me up about 7:30 AM with A Christmas Story still on the tube...opened presents (Got Crazy 08 and can't wait to start it) and then headed to my sister's house in Omaha...nearly got killed on I-80 when some lady decided to come straight into the far left lane off of the exit...couldn't slam the brakes because there was someone riding right on our tail so I just about went into the median...I think my kid learned some new words today. Got to my sister's house just in time for ham and deep fried turkey (yum!)...played pool, video games, opened more gifts and laughed my butt off at my grown middle aged siblings, brother in law and stepdad playing X-box rock band or whatever it's called. Grandma was getting very tired so we headed back to Lincoln about 6:30 PM. No near death experiences on the way home.

With 3 kids under the age of 8 its easy to guess.

My oldest son (Jackson - 7) got a Wii and spent most of the day playing the various games he got with his new console.

My twins (Jacob and Julianna - 3) got too much to list but spent most of the day playing with dolls, cars and other things.

I spent most of my day slowly taking out trash as new items were opened up.  By days end, the house looked semi normal with only a few loose items laying around.

My wife (flight attendant) left for work at 4pm, leaving me to clean up.. what fun!

filming our first Christmas with Emma........she's 21 months, so she was having fun but not TOTALLY understanding it all. Lots of food, fun and family, so that's the way it's supposed to be. Unfortunately, I had no days left to take off between Christmas and New Years, so instead of blowing time at home on the internet, I'm now doing it at work the next three days........

i'm italian, so i'll try to paint the picture of how it goes down:

christmas eve, new jersey-

---seafood extravaganza (no meat). calamari, mussels, cod, stuffed peppers, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp, broccolli rabe, squingilli, hallibut.

christmas day, long island-

---antipasto course: stuffed peppers, caprese (mozzerella, tomato, basil), provolone, sausage, olives, procsuitto bread, artichokes, roasted peppers, asparagus, stuffed mushrooms.

***open gifts during this break***

---pasta course: lasagna, meatballs, hot sausage.

---meat course: this is gonna sound funny, but we were so stuffed, we decided not to continue with our regularly scheduled meat course, so instead, my aunt ordered a 6' hero, and we "picked" on that until our dessert course.

---dessert course: cannoli, spfigidels, cheesecake, brownies, coffee...

how's that all sound?

happy holidays!

Having already done our Chanukah thing, we set out on Xmas Eve to some good friends here on Long Island, where we had good laughs, good seafood, got silly, and exchanged presents too.
Xmas day had us driving into NYC for the section of the family that celebrates Xmas (double-dipping, as it were.) I got some books, a shirt, and the always welcome Starbucks assortment gift pack. Got to witness some of the usual annual snarling between in-laws -- always makes me grateful! -- and then back home to hang with our dog. Low and behold, when we got back here it turns out he's finally decided to convert. I think he wants presents for both holidays too.

I work at a university so we're on winter break and I've been partying for 5 days now...

Too much to eat already...went out to a all you can eat sushi buffet with my folks and still had time to squeeze in a 2 hr mountain bike ride and actually scan some baseball cards.

Off to Monterey peninsula on friday for some more food an partying with friends and then Japanese traditional new years dinner on the first and watching football ofcourse..I will need a few days off from work so I can recover from these days off...LOL.

Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year to all fellow members. It's been great fun being a member of this site.

Wow - I really like these descriptions of how differently people spent Tuesday and how wonderful it all is. From Guitar Hero and deep fried turkey to all-you-can-eat sushi in California. How varied and interesting.

But are we all agreed that next year it's Christmas in New York with the Sarnos? lolol. Mike, we'll be there on the morning of the 25th. All 400 of us. From the sounds of it, all you'll have to do is throw on 2 or 3 more pounds of sausage.

J

Oh - how great is that dog picture??

My day was basically described up above by Mike. We spent almost the whole day at the dinner table, four courses(exact same as above except we had turkey for the meat course) and we opened presents in between the anti-pasta and pasta course just like him. All 15 people in the immediate family showed up,everyone on my dads side. Great time, wish we all got together more often than just Easter,Thanksgiving and Christmas for family dinners like that....but thats easy to say for me when i didnt cook or clean a thing

I also watched part or all of 7 showings of A Christmas Story during the 24 hour marathon and I could watch it again right now if it was on.

Paul S--I love the pic of your dog!

Hopefully this is my most abnormal Christmas I'll ever have. Currently here in Iraq. But, we grilled up some steaks, had a chance to relax for a couple of hours, then right back to work! Oh well, I enjoy my job anyway but nothing beats just being with the family for the holidays. I hope you all had a great holiday season. I can't wait to get back to actually buying some cards instead of just reading about all the goodies you guys have picked up.

Change your socks, drink water, and drive on.

Hey Bill,

I'm sorry to use this thread to ask about this. My brother-in-law leaves next week for Texas for 3 months and then from there to Southern Iraq for however long.

I want to get him something for when he goes, and then also maybe send occasional care packages while he is there. However I don't have the first idea what he will have, what he wouldn't have, what he is or isn't allowed to get, etc.

Can you email me at jmkline@juno.com? I would very much appreciate getting your thoughts on this.

And although I'm glad you were able to at least have some grilled steaks, I hope that next year you can spend the holidays here.

Joann
