Default 1921-24 Exhibit Question

Posted By: Glen V

How does one tell the difference between the 1921 through 1924 exhibits? The way the league is abbriviated differentiates the 1921s from the 22s, but the SCD doesn't say how the 23/4s differ from the first two years. The tougher question is on the 1923/4s - the SCD lumps them together, is there a way to tell them apart?

Default 1921-24 Exhibit Question

Posted By: Hal Lewis

Good question.

From 1921 to 1922, they switched from putting "Am. L." on the cards to "A.L."...

but I don't know if that was ONLY for the NEW players who were added to the set in 1922, or whether they actually made new cards as well for the 64 people who were in the 1921 set.

Anyone know for sure??

-------------------

Then, there is the 1923/24 set, on which I know that the NEW players who were added have the "A.L." desigation... but again, what about the guys from the 1921 set??

--------------

It looks to me like the 1921 set and the 1923 set have the team and league designation in SMALLER block letters that have a TILT to them...

whereas the team and league designation on the 1922 cards are a little bit bigger and STRAIGHT UP and down.

And it says that there are team changes and so forth as well.

SO....

if I am correct...

a guy like Babe Ruth should have the following:

1921 Exhibit - Says "Am.L." in small tilted print

1922 Exhibit - Says "A.L." in straight vertical print

1923/24 Exhibit - Also says "A.L."... but in small tilted print

Default 1921-24 Exhibit Question

The 21s are very distinctive when compared to the 22s. The name writing on the fronts is ornate. The 22s have a very thin line of cursive writing for the name. The 23s are distinguished by two factors. For AL players, the use of AL instead of AmL is the easiest way to tell. Otherwise, you have to know who is in each set. One complicating factor is that a few guys are in both (Ruth and Veach are the ones that stand out in my mind; Veach has a different cropping to the photo and both are AL players, so which is the 23-24 is easy to determine).

Thanks for the info. Still, the big question is the difference between '23 & '24s. From a type collector prospective these are two different sets. That doesn't change because they are hard to tell apart and the SCD lists them together.

I don't think there is ANY difference WHATSOVER between the exhibit cards printed in 1923 and the ones printed in 1924. Thus, the hyphenated "1923-24."

As far as I know, ALL of the cards in that set were released in 1923.
