Default Interesting discovery regarding T201 image

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy

I received a Chief Meyers T201 that I won on eBay earlier today. I made an interesting discovery when I put it in my Chief Meyers type card display case.

The image used on the T201 is the same one used on a Keystone photograph of Chief Meyers that I own dated 1909.

Here is the photo and card for comparison:

Does anyone have other photos that were used for the designs in the T201 Mecca Doublefolder set?

Patrick

I think the photos are different. They are very similar, but they are different. The glove and hand are located higher (next to his belt) on the photograph. On the T201 the glove and hand are located at mid-thigh.

It does look like the photo was the inspiration for the T201 artwork.

Any hand drawn card that is based on a photograph will have a little bit of artistic license. No doubt that was the image the artist used.

the T201 all have awkward player positions because they had to share feet with the other player on the back....most have unnatural poses that you would be hard pressed to see in real life...

i think you stumbled upon a huge coincidence

here is an example where you know the CJ was taken from the same photo (eventhough the FB was made 2 years later its an older picture)

If you fold the Keystone does Doyle appear? Pardon, Coludn't resist.

I think you nailed this discovery btw. The artist had to change the pose to individualize and to match up the knee bones. Thanks for posting.

why did he make short sleeves instead of long sleeves?

too many minor variations to be the same...

also Myers was a catcher, most of his poses for photos will be VERY SIMILAR....

In find it interesting to look at the way the clothing drapes similarly, especially at the left knee and the left side of the shirt (as you look at it.)

Count me in the camp that thinks the photo matches up with the card.

Reminds me of conversations I used to have with a sports artist friend of mine. I'd commission him to do some pieces for me based on photos I had in my collection or that I'd found elsewhere and he'd call me up and obsess or worry over little details, trying to get everything correct.

I'd try to put his mind at ease by telling him if I wanted the art to look exactly like the photo I'd just make an enlargement of the photo and frame it on my wall. I'd encourage him to play around with it and get a little creative.
