Default T207 Lewis No Emblem - How Many?

Posted By: Patrick McHugh

I have collected this set on and off for years and have only seen this card one time. The psa pop report lists 5. SGC does not say. How many of you own or have even seen this card? How many are really out there? This may be the rarest mainstream T card.

I have the "with emblem" Lewis. I have never actually seen the "no emblem" version in person. I don't even bother to put it on my want list any more.

Actually the with emblem is the one with the back damage, however the Lewis w/o emblem may be an old time trim, it came out of a an Auction over 10 years ago. I was fairly certain that a T207 set with both Lewis's was auctioned last year by one of the big houses. I believe it is was Sothebys June 2005.

The really wierd thing about the card is that is has what appears to be a printed corner of another card just to the right of his glove. DID THIS SOMEHOW OBSCURE THE RED INK? would like to see another to compare if it has the same print flaw.

Scott,

Very interesting hypothesis. I've never seen another without emblem, but based on yours I'm guessing all the other ones have the same print mark. It seems unlikely that there would be so few of them if it was an intended variation, and that type of print mark is also so rare (I don't think I've seen another, and I used to collect T207s almost exclusively) it seems too much of a coincidence that the presence of the mark and the absence of an emblem are unrelated. Add to that the fact that they are essentially on the same longitude of the card, and I think you have a very plausible solution to the mystery.

Scott - did the card come from a Mastro auction? I had 2 complete sets and a third set missing only Davis (blue C on cap). So I had 3 of the Lewis no emblem cards. The sets were not high grade, with many trimmed cards, although Mastro had a Loudermilk graded and it was a 6 (looked better to me). I do not recall if the no emblems looked like something obscurred the printing of the emblem.

1st

Peter,

I don't know if it came from Mastro or not, I have had it a long time. If it did it was many years ago.

2nd,

I have spent the afternoon going thru auction catalogues have found only 2 more no emblem Lewis cards in over 60 major auction over the last 10 years

Mastro May 2000 had a complete set with the Lewis no emblem, amazingly the card is even shorter than mine. Perhaps mine is OK

Mastro August 2003(this may be the one Peter is referring to). Same size as mine.

ALSO neither of these cards has the print flaw mine has, So much for that theory.

ANYONE ELSE HAVE ONE?? I did find several sets offered missing just this card, and did find a few Lewis with emblem sold indivually. At this point the ratio my be 10-1 with emblem versus no emblem. Time and a bit more input may reveal a more accurate number.

Scott
