Default How to Pay for $2k+ at Card Show?

Posted By: Matt

I've paid for every card I've ever bought at card shows with cash, but I've never bought anything that was more expensive then the amount of cash I felt comfortable carrying. With an eye on the upcoming Ohio vintage card show, I'm looking to pick up at least 1 card worth $2,000 or so and wanted to know how people usually pay for such purchases at card shows.

I'd imagine that a dealer with a booth has at least that much cash handy, but I'd like to hear from those who don't have booths and are walking around with wallets or dealers who are selling to people - is the expectation still that major purchases are paid for in cash? Would it be possible to pay with a personal check and have the dealer ship the card once the check clears?

"Would it be possible to pay with a personal check and have the dealer ship the card once the check clears?"

That's the way I've done it before.

Better yet get one of the dealers who knows you to vouch for you, give the dealer a check, and walk out with the item.

I've done that before too.

Finally, become as well known as me and you'll not need anyone to vouch for you. (smilie face intentionally omitted)

I always pay cash when possible, Just stuff 5 $100 bills in each pocket.
Not that big of a deal.

This is such a relationship based business that you should have no problem writing a check to someone who knows you.

If I wrote a check I would fully expect to take the card with me.

I imagine your scenario would be acceptible to most dealers. Some would even forgo the holding period, but not all. Just keep in mind that some dealers would rather have the cash, so a quick run to your bank might save you some money. Situations like this occur multiple times at every show in the country, and most dealers should be easy to work with in this regard. Just remember, "Cash is King"!

I have successfully used credit cards at shows. I even had one dealer offer to run my card for another dealer whose card I purchased ...

I've also done part cash and part ck on larger transactions. I found that at shows, most dealers are agreeable and willing especially if you can mention other dealers and collectors you have dealt with as references..and give them your contact information too.

I understand not wanting to carry too much cash, but just one thought: it is easier to negotiate when you have cash in hand as opposed to giving a check. You could also use an excuse, such as "Normally I'd pay your $2600 offer, but I only have $2300 in cash, and I can't make it back again to the show this weekend." That seems to work pretty well.

I'm thinking that I can buy all that I want for $500 and still hang with Spitzer afterwards.

I think I have done transactions just about every conveivable way at shows. Check, cash, credit card, net terms (thanks TIK), borrow, you name it.....First time I met JC Clarke he loaned me about 3k to buy that beautiful T217 Mono I posted a day or so ago that came back in an 80 holder....I think he cashed a check for me but still...he had never met me before.. Cash is best, then check, then cc......regards
