Default Ty Cobb's Voice

In case you haven't heard these, here are some radio interviews with Ty Cobb (and others):

Bob Wolf interviews, including Ruth and Speaker

I heard Ty refer to the interviewer as 'Grantland', so I assume it's Mr. Rice

Jackie Robinson's voice sounds nothing like I thought it would. Some great stuff, thanks for sharing.

Awesome stuff. That is the first time I have ever heard either Foxx or Speaker.

He sounds kind of nerdy.

I love how Foxx is pretty much begging for a job right off the bat. He sounds kinda squeaky

Default Wow, great stuff!

Scott, thanks for providing those links!

Like others I was really struck by Cobb's interview. He sounds so genial and relaxed, not Cobb-like at all. He has such an expansive view of the current (1950s) game vs. his own era, joking about how old-timers will always imagine their own game was superior, but that there would be equally good base-stealers in the current game if not for the home run fixation. He actually sounds like someone you would enjoy talking to, not like the ogre we have come to imagine. Also, where is the Georgia accent? Likewise, Speaker seems to have no Texas accent at all.

Tim, I also wondered where the Georgia accent was, so much so that after listening to the Grantland Rice interview, I googled 'Ty Cobb voice' again to confirm the first interview was authentic, and found the second website.

It seems like everything is on the internet - when I get some time I'll google other players.

JR spoke during part of Ken Burns' 'Baseball' so I already knew - but, at least he didn't sound like Mike Tyson.

The last part of this video was featured in the Ken Burns documentary.

It is very cool to see a least one old-time great threw more three-quarters.

I have seen video of both Johnson and Alexander and they both threw side-armed...and I assume Young did too...but, I've never seen video of Cy.

I loved it when Ty talked about Hal Chase and he waited two years to make his play. Great thread!
