Default Curious about something regarding strip cards and grading....

Posted By: Josh

PSA graded a card authentic and the exact card was cracked out and was given a numerical grade by SGC. Is it just a hit and miss sometimes regarding the grading of strip cards? I have seen a lot of strip cards and most of them are pretty right on. But when I saw this tonight it threw me off. I just read on the psa website what they require the card to have to receive either an authentic or numerical. I am curious to hear opinions on grading of strip cards. Thanks in advance!

PSA wants to see the natural raw edge or the cut line on every side to receive a number grade.

Any card that was meant to be cut after time of distribution, and has been cut, should only get an AUT grade, imo. How the heck can a regular strip card be cut (and who knows when it was cut) and get a numeric grade is beyond me. I have many full strips and always think of how silly it is to see these W5xx cards cut up and put in high grade holders....To me it doesn't make sense. best regards

...on the purpose of grading. If you have a numerical grade on a strip card, you are being provided with information about the card's condition, in addition to its corners. An SGC 98 W5XX is just a card that has essentially no imperfections -- and one that was obviously cut after distribution.

By calling such a card only AUT, you do not know anything else about the card's condition -- e.g., creasing, paper loss, wrinkles, etc.

Grading is best used to learn about the quality of a card when you don't have the card in hand -- and sometimes, even if you do, so you don't miss hidden or hard to find imperfections.

But if you are using grading to rank the condition of cards against each other, then doing this with strip cards will drive you crazy since they were cut after distribution.

I appreciate the feedback that I have received for this. I just find it very odd that a card was in one slab and the exact card was cracked out and it went from authentic to a numerical. I guess you just never know with grading of strip cards.

Then all of the cards that are cut should have a numeric grade and the qualifier of "Handcut"....then I would be ok with it. I have seen PSA do it on some cards and I applaud it. No way should a cut strip card get a straight numeric grade. That diminishes the other non-strip cards numeric grades imo.. regards

I sent 3 W555's to SGC and they came back unslabbed, "hand-cut/mis-cut". They were cut ouside the white lines...so I cut them on the lines and re-submitted. All three came back with numericals...
