Default SGC cards not graded ?

Posted By: joe maples

Hello there, I had some cards graded by SGC this week, 3 cards were not graded.

N172 Campau 0-too small to holder
W512 Cobb 0-too small to holder

What does that mean?

W514 Spencer Miscut left side.

What does that mean? These are all hand cut and probably most miscut, why not grade?

I did send an email to SGC, no response yet.

Thanks Joe

Too small to holder means just that ... they don't have a holder that will fit those cards...i'm not sure why they would accept them in the first place if they didn't have a holder for them....

as an aside...interesting .. i dropped off a couple of w514's for slabbing - just b/c i wanted to make sure they were authentic - and they came back really low graded and the guy at sgc said it was b/c they were cut to small...so they did grade mine.... both got 10's and i was able to sell them back to the person i bought them from (honest guy ... wish i could remember his name).

I had a card rejected for this and asked for an explanation. Their response was that the graders felt that not enough of the card was there to merit grading but that the card was not trimmed in the sense of being deceptively shaved down.

Did you get a refund on your fees? Did you ask about authenticate only services?

I beleive Too Small To Holder means the card itself was undersized and they will not place it in a holder due to the perception of it having been trimmed. Normally you see Miscut it relates to factory cut cards. Maybe the W514 was cut poorly. A call to them will answer these questions.

If it is trimmed, why not say trimmed? I had another card in the group that came back as trimmed. And I'm pretty sure they grade the strip cards, I checked on their site, but will check again. I think I will call them on this, I did get charged for the cards not graded.

Although I respectfully disagree with SGC not grading these particular cards I see their point. If the "cut" was more outside the "lines" then I think they would have graded them. I think they should grade them as "handcut" and give them a grade....but that probably opens a can of worms ......

leon - ..if they cut outside the lines on one card, wouldn't it mean that the card next to it would be cut inside the lines? Kind of eliminates a lot of them from being gradeable.... grading strip cards in slabs is sooo wierd.

I have some strips like these (don't know if identical set) at home and think there might be a little space between the cards. I will check later...unless someone knows off hand. I sort of think all strip cards should be graded as "handcut" and AUT.....period......but then there is that proverbial can of worms.....new cut vs. old cut....though it wouldn't really matter if they were new or old cuts in my grading scenario...

I had an e90-1 Clarke that SGC wouldn't holder because of the same "too small to holder" explanation - it was fairly far from the minimum size restrictions for an e90-1 but I didn't think it was trimmed and apparently SGC didn't either.

Well, here is the email answer from SGC, sounds a little vague don't you think? Sounds like writer is guessing too. Also here is the Campau they did not grade as Too small to holder.

Joe,

I've been down this road .

If they feel it has been trimmed, they will say trimmed. As you know, some vintage sets vary more than others. I think what too small to holder means is...

They don't feel its trimmed, but it doesn't fall above the SGC minimum size parameter.

regards, keith

I also submitted a Campau and had it rejected for the same reason. Otherwise a nice card.
