Default PSA 1 Qualifiers

Why does PSA put qualifiers on a Poor/Fair grade? The grade wouldn't have been lower w/o the qualifier. "Not only is this the worst condition card we've seen, but it also has writing on it..."

Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=5191578912&rd=1

Agreed - qualifiers on the lowest grade possible seems pretty redundant. But, if any card deserves such a designation, it's those tattoo orbits like the one in your link...can I switch over my vote for ugliest prewar set now?

Would the card have been graded PSA 1 if the submitter had specified that no qualifiers be assigned? Or would it have been slabbed "Authentic"?

Andy- the "authentic" grade depends (according to them) on who is doing the grading. A few will give an authentic, most will not. It might also depend on who is submitting and what the card is. SGC graded 2 cards as "authentic" for me because they were both "too small to holder" but SGC had graded all the other cards in the set for me, but they won't do it very often. This was a special case. I heard GAI no longers slabs as "authentic." By the way the card PSA wouldn't grade as authentic in my latest batch was one of the T207 blank backs I bought on ebay.

I have to wonder how you can do worse than poor...Sort of like getting an "F-" on a paper in school.

i think the basis for the authentic label is two fold. it must be requested and it must be a rare card.
i don't think psa will slab any card as "authentic".
when i requested "authentic", the cards were unaltered in any way....so maybe that's why they just slabbed them and moved on.

tbob-after rereading your post...i'm suprised about the blank back t207. would it grade? why did you request authentic?

The only qualifier PSA puts on a "1" is "MK", they will put the "MK" qualifier on any card w/ a pen/pencil mark or if the mark has been erased. Even if a submitter states, no qualifiers on the submission, they will knock down the "OC" - "PD" or "ST" to the lowest grade that it can tolerate. But a card w/ a mark on it cannot be lowered down, its just listed w/ an "MK" qualifier be it a 1 or up to a 9.

People already know a 1 has major damage, so why bother with some qualifiers but not others, is beyond me.

BTW, that's the worst looking Williams Wagner I've ever seen. Geez, you buy a card like that you should get a bowl of soup...but in your collection it looks good (with apologies to Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack).

My T206 Plank was just recently graded authentic by PSA. It is hand cut from a sheet.
