Default Just a Rant

Why would anyone sell a sports card without showing the back or at least mentioning the back is clean or centered. I have noticed experienced dealers doing this and just wonder if it is laziness or something to hide.

It's always only one of those two options that I assume.

Generally it's big sellers being lazy or small sellers hiding something, is my experience. I am sure there are many instances the other way too but those are my thoughts.

I've seen this lately even with pricey graded vintage on eBay. I guess the assumption is that if there is a grade on the slab, that's enough to infer what quality the back is or is not, even without seeing it. Yes - lazy.

Default rant

Hi all- I'll start by saying I don't sell cards on ebay, which seems to be the
focus thus far. I do discuss cards privately with many on this site, which
includes transmitted images. I live rurally and don't have lightning-fast
internet speeds. I also tend to send fairly lengthy lists of cards. I leave it up
to the other person to indicate interest based on the list, then will transmit
images depending on their level of interest. I can say for sure that I have
never- and that's literal, meaning not once- failed to provide any image
because I had "something to hide". Laziness? Since I'm frequently the
initiator of card talks, I think that word doesn't fit either. If I send a net54
member a list of 15 cards for sale/trade, I'm not going to greatly increase
the workload by including 30 pictures (front and back) for a member who
might reply that they have no interest in any on the list regardless of
pictures. Should that person tell me they want images of cards "x,y, and z",
then I provide them happily. Context is key.

Now, if an interested collector asks for images and the holder doesn't
provide them, that's a red flag. Again, the context tells the story.

My favorite is when a card with a back variation is listed, even mentioning the variation in the title. Yet no back scan is provided.

Agree 100%

And it also bugs me when the card shown has a back scan and shows a print variation I'm looking for but then I see the photo is a "stock" photo and not the actual card you will receive.

A few times I asked if I could get the exact card shown but I usually don't recieve a response.

Default sellers descriptions

too many sellers on ebay offer no descriptions and do not point out flaws (front or back) that cannot be seen on the scans or pictures provided, most of which are mediocre to poor...I stay away from these sellers unless I know them or they have respond to my ebay messages/questions, many of whom do not do that either

If you have the cert number you can go to SGC or PSA website and see scans of the backs of cards.

I did not know people actually looked at the backs of cards. Figured it was the label and nothing but the label.

Not quite. PSA doesn't scan every card like SGC. You can verify them saying a cert number is authentic or not on their website, but there is not a picture of every card there. PSA Auction Prices Realized will pickup at least a percentage of scans of PSA cards from sales, but these just rely on the seller images.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think SGC provides a blanket public link to images based on cert #. I think they are available only in the submitter's account.

If you have an id to login with at SGC you can enter a cert and see an image. Assuming they were imaging at the point the card was graded.

And...PSA is providing scans for all cards graded at the Econ service level and above. Sorry if I mislead the public to suggest even cards valued at $75 would be scanned.

I would stand corrected, thanks. I buy graded cards, but don't submit much. It would make sense that PSA started doing the imaging as SGC has been for some time now.
