Default Cycling Team Tintype? Opinions?

Posted By: Keith

Hey guys,

I picked up this tintype a few months back, mostly because of its probable connection to the Frankford section of Philadelphia. The Frankford Athletic Association was started in the 19th century, and eventually gave rise to the Frankford Yellow Jackets football team (who later became the Philadelphia Eagles). The FAA played many sports including cycling. My thoughts were that this could be a cycling team photo because of some other I have seen. I know that cycling teams were very popular in the city of Philadelphia during the late 19th century. I wish I could make out what is on there hats, or the two men's pins, but unfortunately I can't. Any opinions

thanks
KJ

Keith, I'm not an expert but these guys seem dressed for something besides cycling. I only have one cycling photo from the 1890's and they are dressed very different.

Thanks for the response Clint. That's a nice photo you have there. I agree, that the guys in your photo look more dressed for athletic action than the ones in mine. I have seen some cycling team photos that have garb like mine are wearing, but I am not sure if they competed in that clothing or if that was just for a photo. I guess I'll never know for sure what this photo is of.
I also don't know what the little bugle horn the center guy is holding would be for. Anyway, thanks for the input - much appreciated

50/60 early cycling images in my travels (although that was ONLY on cabinet or slightly larger MOUNTED images). It looks more like simply an athletic club studio gathering prior to or subsequent to an event. Sort of like their "dress uniforms"..... Not likely to see "white" colored clothes and long leggings etc. in this sport. Fencing and other indeavors more likely but I don't see the horse nor the dogs that would go with the bugle..... Cycling was EXTREMELY popular right around the turn of the century and ANYTHING is possible.
