...when he opened up his women's college in 1861.

But if anyone stumbles across any 19th Century trade cards depicting the old female baseball team, the Vassar Resolutes -- shown in the Ken Burns documentary -- please let me know.

They are a very scarce premium sized (about 4 x 6) issue of baseball cards on thinner stock, from circa 1912. There are only approx. 5 different players known. They picture baseball players (stars of the day) in a Vassar Sweater. regards

Okay, thanks Leon...not sure I've seen or heard of them before. For a while there I was wondering if Darren was asking for pics of Chicks in sweaters.

...but those of us around Poughkeepsie, NY who hear "Vassar Sweaters" think of the college, not the rare card.

Interesting, as Vassar was a female-only college. I doubt many guys would have worn a Vassar sweater in public, unless they wanted to needled. I can imagine it being the basis for a Leave it To Beaver episode, with June forcing Beaver to wear a Vassar sweater to school. "But mom."

I will try to scan mine in the next few days, I think they are about 8" tall instead of 6" but I haven't looked at it in awhile. Just remember that it is worthless since it is not graded. Dan.

I knew some of the info I quoted above but took other from the 2007 SCD big book. There is a picture of one in that book. Also, as Dan said, I think these are larger than the book says. I think they are on thin stock and might push the boundaries of what a "card" is....which is the other reason I haven't picked one up ....regards

Thin stock is absolutely correct! And I wouldn't consider them a card but a premium. Dan

I heard that there are only five known players, and each "card" is unique. I have the Lajoie - will post a scan tonight. They are on thin paper and look like they have been cut out of something. I thought they were closer to 4x6", maybe a touch taller, but will have to check on that.

Lisa: There's no way I'll get into an ivy league school now. At this rate I probably won't even get into Vassar.

Homer: I've had just about enough of your Vassar-bashing, young lady!

Hence all the Vassar references in the Simpsons during the era in which he wrote/produced the Simpsons.

Never saved a picture of Cobb and yes, seem to be hand cut. Mine is from the Walter Johnson family scrapbook. Dan.

Those are ridiculously cool!

Dan, what is your theory regarding production and/or distribution? Since they are hand-cut, were they part of a larger advertising piece? Or does it seem like they were actually meant to be individual premiums (or whatever you want to call them)?

-Ryan

Tik called me about that card and I couldn't figure it out. When I met up with Doug in Cali, I figured it out. Awesome card! It's in the right hands now. I too wished I didn't pass.

I am completely stumped on these Ryan. Very fair questions and possible ideas you have. Your thoughts are as good as any I can come up with.

I carried that Cobb for many shows and had it on ebay a few times before giving it away cheap to Terry. Dan.

In addition to the subjects here, the Standard Catalog also lists Sam Crawford and Smokey Joe Wood. If anyone has scans of these I'd love to see them.

Thanks

Almost 100% sure based on the passages in the above link that the Vassar on the sweater has nothing to do with the school.

Most likely issued in Michigan.

The History and Pioneers of Vassar The town was founded in the mid-1850’s as a lumbering town by the Honorable. Townsend North. The town also had a woolen mill, with its famous “Vassar Sweater”. Today it is known as the “Cork Pine Capital of Michigan”. See 150 years of history unfold before your eyes! From its business and farm community, floods, churches and schools. and moving on to the prosperous community it is today.

I don't think anyone was actually suggesting these had anything to do with the women's college. I think everyone was joking.

A quick google search will indeed show you that these were from the "Vassar Sweater" company in Vassar, Michigan.

But, just to be clear, these are not my cards (I wish that they were!), rather just images that I have collected over the years.
