Default Framing choice for my big pickup at the 2013 National

Thought I'd share what I came up with when it came to displaying my circa 1938 Johnny Vander Meer pennant that I picked up at this year's National.

I chose to frame it using a cherry wood shadowbox minimal frame, red linen-like backboard and museum quality UV glass (non-glare). The pennant was carefully stitched into the backboard with nearly invisible thread.

Here are the before and after photos. I hope you dig it!

Ben,
Thanks!
Believe it or not, the walls are actually kind of mustard/beige in color. They just look white in this photo for some reason. This photo of the Kreindler painting gives you a better look at the true color of the walls.

About the thread, what I meant to say is that you cannot see the thread even on close inspection, FWIW. Doh!

Invisible thread is actually a pretty good trick though....

Frame job looks great.
Awesome pennant.
Scott, did you know this existed prior to the National? You must have been psyched to see it.

Hi Jon,
Thank you for the nice comments.

Yes, I actually did know of this pennant's existence. Cincinnati Reds collector and friend Chris Gamble (net54) owned it and had shared pictures of it with me in the past.

Chris actually offered to sell it to me as we were both en route to The National in Chicago. We'll call this the best pickup that never touched the actual show room floor...

It's a very scarce pennant (only a small hand full are known to exist), so I definitely am thrilled to add it to my advanced Vander Meer collection. I believe that this pennant was sold at the 1938 All Star game at Crosley Field, where Vandy was the starting and winning pitcher that year for the NL squad.

The background of the pennant being offered at the home All Star game where he pitched and won is fantastic, and definitely explains rarity if offered at a single game. really great presentation.

Thanks!

Since I wasn't a fly on the wall in 1938, I can't guarantee that that was the only game it was sold, but it certainly was sold in the summer of '38. I believe at the very least that this pennant most likely made its debut at The Midsummer Classic.

I really like what you did with the pennant. Very simple and really emphasizes the item and not the frame.
Unfortunately, I think that painting is a blight on your wall and you should send it to me immediately for disposal. Remember, I'm doing this for you!

That's me. Give until it hurts!

One day I'll get my Kreindler framed. Hopefully it'll come out as nice as your did. I love that effect you got.

The pennant looks great in the frame!

It's funny... as I was scrolling down this thread reading the replies I was thinking to myself, "Self, that pennant would look cool displayed with the Vander Meer Kreindler someone posted a few months ago...", of course not realizing it was you, Scott, who owns that great piece as well (post #5 refreshed my memory ). It all makes sense.

Beautiful choice, Scott... Can't imagine how you could do any better.

It really "pops" against the perfect red matting.

Nice job!!!
