If you are fine with how Barry runs his auctions then why even mention it James? When someone from another auction house mentions that another's auction is "archaic" on a message board it's going to come off sounding a little arrogant.

Good point Dan. Perhaps I should differentiate when I'm speaking as a collector and when I'm speaking as an auction house employee. I was speaking as a collector. However, in the future I will avoid ALL topics about other auction houses. Thanks and hopefully there is no harm no foul with Barry. I was speaking 100% as a collector. Those who know me, hopefully would vouch that I'm not arrogant as I seemingly sound.

James- the difference between your post and Sparky's is that you responded intelligently and put your name to it, while that other slugabed posted anonymously and was just plain nasty (and too cowardly to reveal his name).

I am a bit of a technophobe and don't know how comfortable I would be relying on a system I really wouldn't understand. And I would dread a final night crash. I sell alot on ebay and like that format, but for my catalogs I will stick with what I have. While the last night does have its level of stress, I do enjoy speaking with many people who I only get to talk to during the auction. And more than half the bids are emailed to me anyway, so I get a little bit of both worlds.

And it is true that the N28 is an 1888 issue, and thus N172 is the true rookie card. My error, and I wish someone caught it earler as I would have posted a correction.

I was reading my Simpson's book the other day and Mr. Burns referred to his workers as "slugabeds". I didn't know what it meant either and just liked the sound of it. It's a lazy person who stays in bed all day.

Whatever communication method you prefer as a customer, it's important to me to know the person I'm buying a card from is a passionate collector who loves the hobby.

I participated for the first time yesterday on Barry's online auction and was very impressed with Barry's professionalism. First I screwed up the phone number, then I messed up on the registration rules, and called just two hours before the auction ended. Nevertheless, Barry, or whoever took care of my bid, treated me with respect and dignity. They probably spent more time on me than my bid was worth. I was only bidding on one of the lower priced cards in the auction, but he made me feel like I was bidding on the featured item. I will be back.

Best wishes Barry you're a class act.

Joe

Thanks Joe. This is one of the benefits of a phone auction, having positive interaction with people. It was actually me you spoke with yesterday...I'm a bit of a hermit, so the social aspect of a phone auction is part of the reason I do it.

Peter Noone is still pretty active in the music world. He used to have his own show on VH1, but I don't remember the details.

It was a nice auction with a little bit for everyone. Only won 2 lots but bid on a lot more. Good to see strong prices and I wish the gazillionaires would stop going after stuff I like.... JC

Noone's voice has never changed either. I saw him on American Idol singing one of his oldies and he still sounds great. Can't say that about too many of the rockers from the 1960s.

More significant than the fact that Barry used the word "slugabed" (which is actually a word that predated the Simpsons) is the fact that Barry was "reading [his] Simpsons book." I will let that admission stand on its own merit.

As for Barry's auctions, yes, they are archaic in this online era. But, the one thing about Barry's auctions that I know in my heart to be 100% true and I cannot say this about a single other auction house is that I will not be a victim of shill bidding. I just don't have the same comfort level with any other place, no offense. We should all only hope that Barry's auctions proliferate.

I saw the Zombies on PBS a few weeks ago and then went back to the youtube clip from 1965, and they still sounded pretty good. But Eric Burden has no voice left and was embarrassing, and he used to be among the best. Some people age better than others.

Edited to say thanks Jeff, I do treat customers' ceiling bids with tremendous respect. If they feel comfortable enough leaving them with me I know I have a big responsibility not to let them down.

Barry, I saw the same PBS show and was appalled at what Eric Burden looked and sounded like. The guy has not aged well. I'm trying to forget that memory from the show.

I know- he gained a lot of weight, has long had his hair dyed blond, and has no voice left. I agree, it was just awful.

As a side note, Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan did very respectable versions of "House of the Rising Sun" in the early sixties. But after the Animals did their version in 1964, I don't think anyone ever attempted the song again. It was so good that it became almost a sacred cow.

I expect him to retire gracefully

There's a great color clip on youtube from 1964 of the Animals singing "House." It's worth a look (but I think it's lip-synched).

Gee, Barry, what ever gave you that notion that the song was lip-synched? Was it the fact that none of the instruments are plugged in?

I know, I think she was a heavy smoker (not to mention a junkie, too). She was just on the radio promoting the first appearance of "Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus" which was shown last month on PBS. She was part of the Stones' inner circle.

I'm surprised no one mentioned LULU's appearance on the same American Idol show that Peter Noone was
on ?
Coincidentally, the 1967 movie.....To Sir With Love....was on TV last nite. And LULU, now in her mid-50's,
looks a lot "sexier" than in this movie (40 years ago) and sang her song quite well on the show.

I thought she did an awesome job on the song, and she was very easy on the eyes.

I admit it - Yes - I watch American Idol.

Actually it is one of my favorite shows....
but not because of the show itself.

It is one of the few shows on television (not on the disney channel) that the entire family can watch together. When I was a kid - it was all family TV. Anyway, I like the way the show gives us family bonding time - enjoy the show together and talk about it during the week.

Barry, great auction, with amazing results (was outbid on everything).

Just out of curiosity: what time did the auction end?
Without mentioning names, can you say whether most of the bidders were from this forum?

Just curious.....
Sorry for interrupting the discussion of rock and roll...which was interesting as well.

Rock n roll thread?

This undercover photo purportedly of auction night in a Brooklyn apartment suggests that Barry must be a reverse Wizard of Oz, with a heretofore unknown but unsurpassed level of technological sophistication in the hobby industry.

However, just to keep it on topic: I Robot by The Alan Parsons Project

Brian- the auction closed at about 11:15. As far as whether lots were won by board members or not, I didn't do a survey but it was a mixed bag. Many of my customers are oldtimers and I am amazed by how many of them have never heard of Net54. But what I do find interesting is a high percentage of lots are won by new bidders, much more so than old ones. I guess many of them have dropped out of the hobby.

Edited to add I don't know how many new registrants found me from Net54. Many do, some find out in other ways. One woman googled "Duke Kahanamoku" and because I had one of his cards found the whole auction and won the card.

Valens' last name was originally the same as a famous Dodger prodigy of the early 80s who won both the ROY and Cy Young in the same year; Big Bopper's was JP Richardson. I think his son is trying to get him exhumed or something like that....

Looky here....I finally acquired the E-card (action pose) of our "buddy".

I'm sure you recall the movie "American Grafitti" ?

I've developed a great Trivia quiz on it, that I think will stump you.....if interested, email me.

Ted- there's a famous scene in "American Graffiti" where they tie a chain onto the back of a police car, and when it accelerates the axle and back tires fall off.

On what classic TV show did two teenagers pull the same stunt on their hapless friend? (years before the movie).
